I know there usually are heat/rut suppressants for omegas and the occasional alpha, but I'm thinking about like... some kind of doordash for betas and them being able to take a pseudo heat/rut inducer which is probably terrible for them. Awful side effects.

The most impactful story I ever read was smut.

spoilers for a story I vaguely remember reading online 15 years ago and couldn't recall the title of if you put a gun to my head

It was a short story about the earth exploding (I think? being destroyed anyway). Some survivors were rescued by an alien race, the story was told from the POV of a woman who had been disfigured due to burns, and she was being ostarcized by the other humans because they were uncomfortable with her disability.

She got attached to one of the alien... But these aliens had no concept of love as we understand it. The human survivors are told that they're going to be integrated to the alien race as full citizens, their minds wiped of their griefs, so they can live productive, happy lives.

Protag refuses and begs to be allowed to keep her memories, while the other survivors are relieved to be rid of the trauma and survivor guilt. The aliens tell her it's fine, she doesn't have to.

She gets closer with her alien love interest, they fuck, he's starting to understand what love means to us, and to feel it for her...

And then she's dragged away to be mind wipped with everyone else. So her entire identity, her memories, her grief, her joy, anything that made her "her" is being erased and it's punctuated by a "April's Fool!"

Because the boss alien had been studying earth culture. And didn't understand it.

And the love interest alien is left behind, feeling hollow with these new, earthling feelings that he doesn't know how to understand or cope with.

That "April's Fool!" as she was struggling and screaming was absolutely chilling for me, and I keep thinking about it.

I wish the author knew how much they impacted me.

Like. Maybe the writing isn't as good as I remember it to be. That's kinda what happened with Katawa Shoujo. Rin's route fucking wrecked me at the time because I resonnated with her so much, and then I replayed it this year and... It's alright.

But sometimes you read something at the right moment and it changes you. The fact that maybe it's not as good as I remember it being doesn't change the profound impact it had on me.
