Calculating Yarn Yardage

You’ve knit your project and finished and you have a partial skein left, and you want to know how much yarn you used and how much yarn remains for other projects. Here how you calculate the remaining amount.

Step 1: Weigh the remaining yarn

You’ll want the scale set in either grams or ounces, depending on what the yarn ball band says (i.e. if it says 100g then set your scale to grams, if it says 4oz then set it to ounces). Take the partial skein that’s left over from your knitting project and place it on the weigh scale. Write down the number.

Step 2: Calculate for weight used

You have the amount of yarn leftover, so now you need to do some simple subtraction to get the weight of the yarn you used. To do this, subtract the weight of the yarn leftover from the weight of a full skein.

Step 3: Calculate for yardage

Last, we’re going to do some simple algebra. You’ll lay out two fractions: full skein yardage / full skein weight, and x / weight used. Then, you’ll use cross multiplication to solve for x, same way you did in high school.

Squee! This month I was able to budget in the fabric for my winter wardrobe overhaul. Thanks to a gift certificate I’d been saving, that includes some from Mood! Black embossed velour. 1.5 yards, planning for it to be some kind of top. It would be nice to go to their store again someday, but chronic fatigue doesn’t always allow for that. Luckily they have a website shop too.
