His growing obsessive love is something rather tricky for Yatora, after all he tends underestimate himself way too much, specially his feelings, he may feel some magnetic attraction for you, his eyes may follow your form whenever you happen to walk close to where he is and even his mind may be constantly wondering what you are doing, what you are thinking and what you may be feeling, he may be obsessively in love and yet it isn't until he found his way to the art that he started to actually take more seriously those feelings

Before the art he was just going through life, he was just flowing with the rhythm and putting up a smile, it was until he found himself faced with the art that he started to pay more attention to the details, that he started to be more sincere and pay more actual attention to himself, finding himself thinking even more about you

It didn't take too much time before Yatora found inspiration in your only existence, wondering if you would like what he is working on, if he could become good enough to even impress you at least a little, becoming incredibly embarrassed and even ashamed of himself when he caught himself daydreaming about showing you off what he has managed to paint, daydreams a bit too vivid of you praising his work and efforts

But then Yatora was faced with the cruel reality, his way through art has brought out something he has been so ignorant of until now, he realized how terribly afraid and insecure he truly is, how much he doubts himself, how pathetic he truly is, how little he sees himself and how much he is far behind from everyone, how his dreams are terrifying, intimidating, how much he wants to hold himself and cry because he feels like he can't handle it

And even when he is able to find the strength to fight and continue going, to stand up and keep going, to do art because that is what he wants and will achieve! Even if he is able to find the strength when he is the most pressured that doesn't mean he is less insecure, it was when facing you again after realising how little he truly is when he was faced with that delusional truth, you are far away from his reach

Yatora sees his darling as his muse, someone perfect even with all their imperfections, he is nothing compared to his darling and like that he has nothing to offer his darling, he barely is able to handle his fight for his wish to study arts, he can barely hold himself back together after facing how demanding and mentally exhausting art is, he can't handle even just try to have a chance with his darling

This doesn't mean his love will fade away, that is something that will never happen, that just means that he feels even less deserving of his darling, if he can't even be good at art he will never be able to be good enough with his darling, all those self-depracating thoughts end up making him push his darling away, because even if his darling may care for him in any way, or even just pity him, Yatora keeps telling himself that he just doesn't deserve that, he needs to be better, to become something, someone at your level, someone at least deserving of your kindness

“How does it feel to hate the things you love?”

A puff of smoke escapes his chapped lips, eyes glistening with a sense of mirth from your question.

Yatora Yaguchi has always been an enigma. From the moment he dyed his hair and pierced his ears, to when his love for art blossomed into an almost self destructive endeavour.

You wonder why he did it. Why would he go through such lengths for it all? For his definition of love.

Even more so now, as he stood in front of you. Yatora looks different now, you thought. Clad in nothing but an all black hoodie and weathered jeans gifted to him during his high-school days, one would think he looks the same as usual. Nothing out of the ordinary.

But you know better. He knows better.

His usually bleached hair is showing his natural roots. The whites of his eyes are bloodshot; Yatora walks with a sense of lethargy instead of self-assured confidence, a feeling you know all too well.

He, too, is hit with the feeling of sullen dreams.

“It fucking sucks. I have no idea what I’m supposed to be doing.” Yatora brings up a hand to his face, covering the bags that rimmed his eyes. “Pass me another smoke, would you?”

A reluctant grimace finds its way onto your face, hand reaching into your pocket for the box of poison anyways. “You’re killing your lungs that way, y’know.”

“And you’re killing your liver. You’re one to talk.”

Downing the liquor you would once steal from your parent’s cabinets, and were now legal to buy it with your own money, you reminisced.

Back to your youth. Back to when Yatora was encapsulating a blue Shibuya - not living amongst the colour. Back to when you and he didn’t lay in shards of crushed hopes that pierce through the very cores of your beings.

“It would be easier,” you turn to him, watching how the evening glow of Shibuya painted his face with warmth. “If you lived without passion. Like me.”

A beat of silence passes through the air. “No thanks,” he interjects.

“Hey! Why?” You punch his shoulder half-heartedly, “I’m serious. I almost died trying to create a so-called ‘magnum opus’, and now you might too. That’s the last thing I want from you.”

Another cloud of smoke enriches the air around you. And with the smile he gives you, one with the brilliance of a thousand stars, Yatora makes you realise. Within this ghost city, so devoid of life, there was still hope. Hope that came in the form of an ex-delinquent boy, now a Geidai student.

“Because, you said it yourself back in our second year of junior high. That’s the worst way of living. And eventually, you’ll lose sense of yourself, right?” His hand reaches to readjust the scarf he placed around you, delicately. Like he always was, with you. “I believe you still live with passion. You just refuse to believe it.”

Yes, you thought to yourself. Yatora’s right when he says you do live with passion.

But it’s not what he may think.

It’s not in the form of art, not in the tangible, literal sense anyways. Not in the way society thinks of what art is.

It’s in the form of love.

In the form of him.

Yatora is your magnum opus. And you hope to see him bloom into something magnificent.

So, you partly know the answer to your own question. To feel hatred for the things you love? It is to feel hatred towards the man you dedicated yourself wholly to, for he is the one who is slowly leading himself into turmoil.

But, just as before, you will wait. Forever, and evermore. The words lingering on the tip of your tongue will remain unspoken until he, too, sees you in a similar light.

You sigh. That’s enough thinking; you’ve drunk too much again.

A slight tug to your hands snaps you back to reality. “C’mon, daydreamer. My mum has been wanting to see you again. How does spending a night at my house sound?”

The slight desperate tone in his voice makes you realise that maybe, just maybe, Yatora is clinging to the past too.

Little do you know, he views you as something incomprehensible too. Why does he always search for a glimpse of you in the Geidai halls? Attending class would be the last thing you do. It is all unknown to him.

Yatora’s love burns. He is able to paint even through tears; he never feels as if too much is enough. And maybe that’s why he refuses to let you go. He can never get enough of you.

He can never get enough of the person that historians would dictate as his muse.

And maybe that's why he refuses to say the words which cling onto the deep crevices of his heart so very deeply.

“oh these are cute!” you giggled, holding up yatora’s glasses to your face. “how do i look?” you teased, leaning in close to your boyfriends face.

yatora smiled warmly, leaning close enough for your nose to touch his. “better in those than i do.” he gave you a quick peck before moving back to get a better look at you. “you know,” your boyfriend began. “i haven’t worn those in ages. where did you find them?” you pointed over to the small neglected corner of yatora’s desk where piles of old paintings, sketchbooks and used art tools were stacked up neatly. “under all that.”

wandering over to the desk, yatora sighed as he flipped through the pages of his filled sketchbooks from when he had first taken an interest in art. it felt nice looking back at his old stuff, a clear improvement had been made between then and now and he couldn’t help but feel pride wash over him as his fingers skimmed over the pages.

one sketch caught your eye as you reached forward and pulled it out. a rough sketch of the classroom, multiple backs of heads drawn from yatora’s perspective and one of his first sketches. “there’s me.” you gasped gently, pointing at one of the heads captured in yatora’s drawing. he hummed as his attention shifted onto you and the drawing before letting out a small ‘ah’.

“that is you.” yatora nodded, taking the sketch from your hand into his. “not very flattering is it?” you joked, arms wrapping around his shoulders as your chest pressed into his back. “well it was from when i was a beginner so i’m not surprised.” he shrugged, attention still focused on the drawing.

yatora knew his skills weren’t as refined as they were now, obviously they wouldn’t be, yet his first few sketches were still pretty good. still, after you showed him the sketch he couldn’t help but feel he owed you an updated portrait; one preferably not of the back of your head amongst many others.

“hey,” yatora turned around, hands slipping down to hold your waist to guide you to sit on the edge of his bed. “how about you let me sketch you again. only this time,” he leaned forward to press a kiss to the top of your head before sitting down opposite you, paper and pencil in hand. “i sketch your pretty face.”

"Yatoraa~" You hugged him from behind "whatcha working on." You looked over his shoulder at a blank canvas. You heard a deep sigh as he leaned into your hold.

"I don't know anymore, I'm supposed to draw something in black and white and still get the same effect as color but its hard." You could tell he was frustrated and you wanted to help.

"How about you take a little break and look around, try to find something with a lot of feelings even without color." You start to pull him away from from the canvas. He chuckles turning around and hugging you.

"Is this your way of asking me on a date." He held you tight giggling like a school boy. You would've said something if you weren't being pressed into is chest. You started dating Yatora a few months before he joined the art program and to him it was perfect timing.

"Alright lets go somewhere." He basically dragged you out of his house saying bye to his mom and walking around the bustling city for a while before you both came across a ramen shop.

small talk and childish laughs were shared at the shop. You could tell he was getting to relax a bit and you were glad. When he first started practicing art he as so excited but got burned out fast. You were glad that he was finally able to give his brain a little break. Finishing your meal you asked "did anything spark your interest yet." You said as you started to pay for the meal.

"Nope, nothing yet. How about we go your house we could watch a movie or something." He rubbed the back of his neck all shy like as you gushed at how cute he looked. "Sure lets go."

When you made it to your house you realized your parents weren't home. You began setting up for the movie in the living room
