“Today we will be adding the last ingredients to our Amortentia potions, by the end of the class I expect all of you to be smelling different scents,” Slughorn instructed.
They’d been brewing Amortentia for days and Regulus was bored. When he had taken NEWT level potions he came with the expectation that they would be brewing extremely difficult potions. Potions which only the best of the best could brew.
What he wasn’t expecting was brewing a potion which only resulted in people blushing and giggling. It was thoroughly annoying.
“Don’t you look happy,” Barty snarked, standing beside him. The only reason he had even taken potions was because he didn’t want to have a free without Evan or Regulus. Until now he had contributed to the potion by standing there and letting Regulus do all the work.
Honestly, Regulus preferred that. It was better than someone messing up his grade.
Barty kicked his shin when he didn’t answer causing Regulus to glare at him and then sigh.
“It’s just that its a pretty useless and basic potion, no one even knows if it actually works or people just lie to get who they want,”
“You don’t believe in the potion?’ Barty asked.
“Yes, there’s no proof about it actually smelling like someone you love,”
“Well, why don’t you smell it. It looks done to me and considering you brewed everyone knows its going to be perfect,”
Regulus thought about it. He remembered when he had seen a red faced Sirius rush out of the classroom last year after their year had brewed Amortentia. He and Lupin had gotten together in the next week.
Deciding Regulus really had nothing to loose, he hesitantly sniffed the potion and—
Oh
the potion smelled like the forest, with a lot of broom wax mixed into it. There was a smell of an animal, Regulus didn’t know which one but all those things mixed together created one smell.
James.
Regulus didn’t notice the soft smile that crept up on his face. Unlike Sirius he wouldn’t have to avoid James for a week because they were already together. Regulus’s smile widened as he thought of how happy James would be when Regulus told him that he smelt James in his Amortentia. Maybe the potion did work and wasn’t completely useless.
“So?” Barty asked reminding him he was not alone and in face surrounded by people.
Regulus’s smile was immediately gone and replaced by a bored expression.
“It’s not completely useless,”
Barty grinned. “You smelled Potter didn’t you,”
“Piss off!”
