Writing the first chapter for my fic Argentum, that Fate/Stay-Night x D.Gray-Man fanfic!!! And making up precise measurements for the summoning circle design. And working in my breakdown of Illya’s personality and trauma and how it has shaped the Master we now know, adore, and slightly fear.
factorials make people sound really excited about numbers
like

oh ok so ill ask you an easier question
whats 100-33

the way i had to whip out a calculator like you don’t understand how bad i am at math.
I enjoy doing math in debate :]
Okay, so I've been seeing videos and posts talking about how the magical population numbers in Harry Potter don't make sense. There's some debate on how many people were in hogwarts, ranging anywhere from 280 to 1000. For those who don't know, 280 comes from the books during the first sorting scene. Only 40 children are sorted and extrapolating from that, we can assume there are 280 students at Hogwarts. The unnamed author later on said that there are 1000 students at Hogwarts, which doesn't exactly go with what is presented in the books. And to go with it, they also say that the Britain Wizarding population is about 3000. Do you really expect me to believe that about half of the population is under the age of 18? (Remember 1000 is the population for those aged 11-17. That's not counting 18 year olds, and those younger than 11.
In the face of these numbers, I decided to crunch some of my own, so that way they can be a bit more realistic. Note: since I'm from the US, I will be using population statistics from here.
Starting off, I looked at afe distribution, and it seems that the lowest percentage 0-18 year old in the population is about 19% of the total, but we're going to round that to 20% In simpler terms, if there were 100 people, 20 of them would be aged 0-18.
For hogwarts calculations, I'm going to assume that each class size is 280. I just chose this number since it already has some sort of Canon behind it and that it is around an average class size for here in the US.
So, for calculations, 280×7 gets us 1,960 students at Hogwarts, ignoring any yearly differences of course. Since this is only for ages 11-17, that's slightly less than half of the 0-18 range. To fix that for more calculations, we're going to double that. (I know it's a lot of rounding, but this is just to get some basic numbers to work off of) Our new number is 3,920. That is the total amount of magics aged 0-18. Since that number is only 20% of the population, we need to then multiply that number by 5 to get the full population. That gives us roughly 20,000 (actual 19,600) for the Britain Wizarding population.
Another thing that kinda bothers people is the teacher amount for students. I semi-researched this a little bit, and generally, there are normally around 30 students for one teacher. I'm not going to be taking in account any type of schedule, just class number and student number.
Hogwarts has 13 classes, and assuming that every student is in class at the same time, we have about 150 students per teacher at anytime. This of course would work in a college type class, but Hogwarts is meant to be junior high and high school. So, to meet our approximate 30 students per one teacher, we'd need about 5 teachers per subject. So, sorry Snape, you apparently missed out on not one, but 5 positions for DADA.
Any feedback and criticism is welcome! I'm curious to hear your thoughts.
I built a shelf from inch-thick plywood to go over my washer and dryer, then hemmed twelve yards of curtain fabric. I’m covered in sawdust and stray threads I’m a goddamn modern woman and I will have it all
if anything divided by 0 is undefined then does that mean that i can define it?
numbers are merely symbols
do what you want
just know that you’re gonna break math
