For the fifth book of guardians of childhood
So….finally finished the fifth book. *takes a deep breath* as I write this I can already see the hate comments coming, and even though I don’t like giving my opinion as I have been strictly an art page in the past, I thought it was very important that someone acknowledged this. Also NOTE this is completely opinion based, and is my own analysis on the fifth book of the guardians of childhood series, so if you don’t agree with me, you’ve been warned!!!
Please don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed the book, and then about a couple chapters near the end I was a bit, confused? Keeping in mind this is supposed to be a children’s book, as well as how the entire series revolves around the prospect of never giving up on hope and how significant it is to have belief. I felt that that had fallen a bit short, and even contradictory when it came to the antagonist, pitch black, or formerly known as Kozmotis Pitchiner. I believe I was confused, because of the way his possible death scene was a bit, vague? Koz is purged of the darkness and I found it unclear if everyone was crying for joy or sadness, Jack’s hand is healed that connects him to pitch and pitch’s wound isn’t?? I also found it odd how short the scene was, followed up by two more chapters that never bring his death up again, it’s as if it never happened.
Another thing that bothered me was that the guardians could have brought kozmotis back to life, as they have in the past with Ombric through the power of belief. I’m not including events of the movie as they take place in separate worlds and, as of the fifth book, contradict each other, despite the similarities between the two. But i suppose it’s important to note how the movie and the books all revolve around the power of belief, how sandy even cheats death because Jamie and his friends believe in him. How perfect would the ending be if the guardians brought the children back and brought kozmotis back to life. Now for those of you who believe he deserved it after all of the death and trauma he caused, I understand and respect why you feel that way. Pitch was a jerk. But looking back on his story, why he acts the way he does, it’s easier to feel sympathy for him. Yes he is the antagonist, but he’s also not pure Disney villain evil. Also I do not condone what he did during the golden age, or what he did to mims parents, it was terrible, but I also do not agree with how the guardians “dealt” with pitch. I believe they could have at least tried a bit harder to reach out, possibly negotiate, instead of reacting to his aggression with more aggression. Again, this is a children’s book. That being said I would have liked to see the guardians not only fighting fear, but also being role models and not always choosing aggression. That, even though pitch is a terrible person, he wasn’t always and because of that, because we know he is still capable of good, that should have been enough of an excuse to at least try to reach out and make peace, instead of simply ignoring the problem until it/ pitch becomes to much and eventually they have to fight back.
Finally, the best for last, children need some fear. Don’t get me wrong, fear can be very crippling and terrible, but so is none at all. Children and adults alike need fear in order to survive. Children especially as often times they don’t know better. Parents aren’t always going to be there to make sure children aren’t jumping off of roofs or climbing really tall trees, the guardians can’t always be there to protect children either as they are too busy. In conclusion, I love the guardians series, the books are gorgeous and clever, the movie is stunning and beautiful to look at, and I enjoy the messages each book and the movie caries. Perhaps that is why I wrote this to begin with. The ending of the fifth book does not feel on par with the lessons the universe teaches us. To always have belief and hope, wonder and fun, memories and dreams. Perhaps it’s time to have some courage as well, say what needs to be said as far as I’m concerned. I belief Pitch/Koz, given time, forgiveness and patience, can become a guardian
