this isn’t the first person elizabeth had come across injured. the first thing she does is check for a bite, because if she finds one, there’s no point in trying to help. she learned that the hard way and she’s not likely to make that mistake again - she can’t afford to with ella. maybe if she were trying to survive this new world alone, she might at least try to help the bitten and infected. but having worked on the front lines when this all began, she knew the dangers of close proximity.
“ here, in case you feel the urge to scream, bite down hard. “ taking a stick from her daughter, elizabeth wrapped it in loose cloth and handed it to the woman they had found. she nods at ella, silent communication telling her pre-teen daughter to watch the road. she’s long stopped cringing at the sight of ella with a gun on her hip and a knife in her hand. skilled hands travel down a pinned leg, blood staining her hands . . . she resists the urge to balk at the lack of sanitation available. she hasn’t been able to scrub wash her hands in months and it makes her skin crawl, but she can’t let that stop her. “ this is going to hurt, try not to make any sudden movements. what’s your name ? “
