Today is my belt test for karate. I’m trying for yellow tip. God, I’m such a nervous wreck. I know my Japanese terms for yellow tip. I know the moves, but I have such performance anxiety. I hate kiais. I’m just not made for those, being a quiet person by nature.
Hopefully, Sensei Ron Thomas’ words will give me some strength and peace of mind.
I did it! I am now a yellow tip! I remained a nervous wreck until the many little ones progressing from yellow tip to yellow belt tested. They went first since it would be easier on the parents and the senseis, as well as the fact that there were only two of us going to yellow tip (both adults). I realized that I knew the moves better than these kids. I actually kiaied and did so loudly! Right before they awarded us our belts, my Sensei actually said a few words about me. He was so impressed by how much I improved and he said he was so proud of me! He also waived the $50 testing fee for me because he was so proud of me. I had a perfect score from all three judges for Japanese terminology. The rest of my scores ranged from good to very good between the three judges.
