reasons I rly like Tidus (other than him being a clown/goofball/owner of a uniquely obnoxious laugh)
- he has an eye for beauty around him, and often makes it a point to appreciate it. he has lines such as ”that sunset was different from the one we saw in Kilika. it was quiet, almost… gentle”, he likewise feels ”a gentleness” coming from Yuna’s first aeon, describing their encounter as nothing like he’d ever seen, and do I even have to mention how he (at length and with great detail) describes the Zanarkand sunsets to Yuna? and then there’s the Moonflow scene, etc etc.
- okay, so a lot of these have to do with Yuna, with obvious beauty and grace of her own. however, when he first sees her perform the sending, he describes the experience as ”strange” and ”horrifying”, as something he never wants to see again, despite the… aesthetic merits of it all. he recognizes the grim association to death and isn’t just stupidly goggling at this girl he likes.
- he rushed into the Cloister of Trials without hesitation to try and help someone he then pictured as an ”old geezer”.
- at Baaj Temple, already in the middle of a traumatic experience, he is almost killed and then violently abducted by the Al Bhed, and, to be fair, rescued in the process. but in Luca, he makes no mention of these initial mixed messages to Yuna and the others, and only talks about the ”Al Bhed that saved [his] life when [he] first came to Spira”… that ”took [him] on their ship and even gave [him] food”. he also actively tries to pass a message of thanks to them through some complete strangers, not caring if he makes a fool of himself.
- he may deny being a crybaby in front of Auron, but he admits it to himself. ”maybe even now… just a little”. in general, he is a male teenage protagonist whose proneness to crying is portrayed as a weakness… from the point of view of the antagonist, his abusive father. other than that, it is positively portrayed: Tidus cries as he and Jecht finally settle their differences, and he essentially says he loves him (by saying the opposite, something he also wanted to him to know). also, when Yuna finally breaks down crying in front of Tidus, only then can they finally express their true feelings toward one another. and Yuna herself does a 180 with her confusion and sense of betrayal concerning Yevon and her pilgrimage, and comes out stronger than ever.
- he was seven when his father disappeared and was presumed dead, and his mother subsequently died of a broken heart – before the emergence of some weird dude in red, who, judging by their interactions 10 years later, always stayed as a bit of an enigma to him. and this didn’t stop Tidus from, somewhere along the way, figuring out who he was on his own, and going on to becoming a star athlete and a caring, kind, and even wise person.
- not so sure about that last one? pick any internal monologue of his. guy is both observant and contemplative, able to consider many viewpoints, good at reading people, in tune with his own, highly nuanced feelings… (and please note that I differentiate between… cold intellectual prowess and emotional/social/philosophical insight)
to be continued ‘cause I have a lot of feelings about Tidus
