YLJA STURLUDÓTTIR
MUSE INFO:
name/nicknames: ylja katinka sturludóttir age + birthday: 20 / sept 14th ( virgo sun cancer moon fyi ) gender + pronouns: woman-ish ( she - it, tentatively ) powers: spider physiology
wall-climbing: what it says on the tin
mutated/extra eyes: no functional use, but an apparent part of its mutation
( https://tinyurl.com/yblqauoy ) eye horror lite ™ in link
fangs ( https://tinyurl.com/y9tf7ota ) which can shoot non-lethal venom like a green lynx spider
similarly, she can inject venom with a bite – this is more effective and almost never used
alignment: true neutral, anti-hero
bio/backstory:
ylja was born in iceland to a large family with predominantly powered children.
at a young age, its earliest power, wall climbing, developed. this and the clefting of one of her pupils caused her parents to avoid and unfairly discipline her, believing her to be possessed.
to escape her vitriolic home environment, ylja joined a travelling circus for room and board. she excelled there with the help of her power. she and her crew traveled northern europe for a few years.
during this time, she became an iconic in-show duo with another performer. they had a rushed wedding, then a baby boy, leaving ylja incapable of performing during her pregnancy and out of a job. her and her ex-husband’s relationship ended as quickly as it started. she moved to america with her baby.
like cris, she volunteered to be involved in a scientific program as a voluntary test subject for cash to support her as she got her groundings in america. this encouraged her mutation to accelerate, giving her an extra eye, sharp teeth, and venom. she’s one of the survivors of the labs discovered back in 2016.
now she lives in a dingy apartment with a gaggle of misfit mutants and her kid, all doing their best. making ends meet. it’s found family: metahuman edition. being in a supportive environment and raising a powered child has made her increasingly inclined to take up hero-ing. she has no plans to take up a big, showy persona, but she’s getting a reputation for nighttime heroism nonetheless.
this is less important but to paint a picture i wanted to include some ylja facts because i think it’s fun. if this is more annoying than helpful u can take it out of my app, it’s cool, i love u.
her son has eight eyes and heightened intuition. he’s a pisces. we love him.
she collects knick-knacks and is known to pocket kitschy items to add to her hoard.
her accent is thick but almost impossible to place because she accumulated elements of accents and dialects from all over northern europe through her travels.

Icelandic (not-so) Sunny Indie Folk
Reykjavik-based band lead by two girls in love with americana roots moods and vocal harmonies. Even though Ylja's music tries to deliver the warmest and softest feelings, the result holds a certain melancholia that - just like an old 8mm tape - can't help but make you cringe a little on the inside, as if suddenly you become aware of something broken inside you. Plus points: Ylja are one of the few bands in the word that can put an ukulele on a beautfiul song without making it sound cheesy. p.s.: I'm quite sure that I've seen on the 'net another icelandic band using that same Volkswagen van on a different clip. Geez... Iceland has to be such a small place...

Ylja - Fall
The track opens with hushed plucks of the guitar and muted percussion, whilst the two vocalist go to and fro over the top. It’s rare that bands with two lead singers can pull it off, but with years of friendship and work under their belt, the chemistry between the two is clear and their voices work perfectly together. The track moves into a steady crescendo, with electronic instrumentation building as the two front-woman sing mournfully: "time flies, before my eyes."
Ingibjörg Elsa Turchi: An Iceland Airwaves ‘Secret’
This year’s Iceland Airwaves Music Festival was, as ever, an exciting, fully immersive experience across the city of Reykjavik. Hundreds of acts graced over 60 venues, turning everything from churches to clothing stores into buzzing hives of musical activity.
Thousands of wristband-clad music-lovers flocked to the official venues to witness performances from some of Iceland’s best-loved musicians, and a few out-of-towners too. Meanwhile the off-venue locations opened their doors to all, with more intimate performances happening throughout the long weekend.
With so many high-profile artists taking centre stage at Iceland Airwaves 2015, we wanted to dig a little deeper into the experience of a lesser-know festival performer and discover our own Iceland Airwaves ‘secret’.
Enter bass-player, Ingibjörg Elsa Turchi (Far right in above image). At 26, Ingibjörg has clocked up eight years of performances at Iceland Airwaves, and this year returns to play 16 on and off-venue gigs with four different bands.
We caught up with Ingibjörg at festival Founding Partner Icelandair’s off-venue, Slippbarinn, for a quick chat before she rushed off to another sound-check.
Hey Ingibjörg, we saw your performance here with Soffia Bjorg yesterday and now you’re back again with another band! Exactly how many gigs are you playing this year?
It’s going to be 16 in total, both on and off-venues with four different bands, so quite a busy festival!
You seem completely unfazed by it all though; I take it you’re not new to rocking the Airwaves stages?
I’ve been performing here every year, except one, since 2007. It’s always a really fun experience.
So you said you were here with four different bands, who are they?
The bands I’m playing with at the festival this year are Teitur Magnússon, Ylja, Soffía Björg and Justman.
Which one would you say is your main band?
They all are really, but I’m also in two other bands that aren’t playing Airwaves this year, they’re called Boogie Trouble and Babies. I’ve played the festival with them a couple of times before too.
I imagine you don’t get a lot of time to see other bands while you’re running from venue to venue, but who have you been most excited to see this year?
I have had very little time to see anything this year, but there are a lot of great Icelandic bands playing. Mr. Silla is one of my best friends so I love to see her shows. I also love Ariel Pink.
You must have had a lot of different experiences and types of performances at Airwaves, is there anything that stands out as a particular highlight?
Oh there’s just so many, it’s hard to choose! I love playing the off-venue shows because they’re so relaxed and it’s just a completely different atmosphere. I played at Kormákur & Skjöldur, which is a clothing store, yesterday, that was pretty cool.
What’s the main thing you take away from your Iceland Airwaves experiences?
The most important thing to remember is that it’s all really about having fun. It can be stressful the month beforehand, planning rehearsals and juggling the schedule, but when the festival gets going we all just have a really great time.
What’s next for you after Airwaves?
I’ll be heading to London with Ylja to play a few festivals, which I’m really looking forward to.
Ingibjörg Elsa Turchi plays bass on the latest albums from Soffía Björg and Ylja.
