I like to think there was a scout in a very similar situation as Ilse Langnar that actually made it to the sea, starving and tired, after days of carefully treading through forests, plains, and mountains without their ODM gear. Despite unfortunately dying on the way back, the pure spectacle and monumental amount of euphoria they must’ve felt actually reaching it would’ve overshadowed all turmoil they’ve gone and will go through. They knew they probably wouldn’t make it back home… but it was alright.

Chapter 3: Meeting the colleagues

After introductions were all said and done, everyone got in their pajamas and began eating to get ready to start their training tomorrow. Currently, multiple people were crowded around Erwin as he ate his soup.

Moblit: "O-okay, so you're really from Shiganshina? And you REALLY saw real life titans with your own eyes?"

Erwin simply looks around at the crowd around him, feeling a bit uncomfortable with both the presence he's attracted, and the conversation topic at hand.

Erwin: "Yes. Yes, I did. I saw titans. I think I've made that pretty clear."

Moblit: "I- I'm sorry, it's just... Such a bizarre thought..."

Petra: "Can you tell us how big they were?"

Petra says as she gets closer to Erwin, the question only causing the group to get more curious. Erwin simply sighs and puts his spoon down before responding reluctantly.

Erwin: "They varied in sizes, I can't determine just how big each individual one was by myself. I'd say the biggest one was about 17 meters. Well, besides..."

Erwin looks down at his soup again as he remembers the day. The site of the Colossal. The titan that shook humanity for the first time in over 100 years.

Erwin: "...the big one."

The mention of the Colossal causes everyone to go quiet. Just mentioning it brought fear among everyone there. After a brief moment, Moblit breaks the silence.

Moblit: "The Colossal I think is what they're calling it. Wasn't there also some kind of titan that had steel skin? That's what survivors said, at least."

Just after he says that, another cadet from another table behind them calls out: "The Armored. They're calling it the Armored."

Everyone turns around to see who said that, and behind them was a girl with dark, messy, brown hair and her hair in a bun, sitting with 2 other people.

Gabi: "I actually saw that thing. It trampled over everything I had. And I... Lost someone special..."

As they stare at Gabi her expression turns to an aggressive one as she clinches her fist and grits her teeth. Petra walks over to her and puts her hand on her shoulder.

Petra: "That's awful to hear. Whoever they were, I'm sure someday you'll get justice.

Gabi's eyes widen at Petra's positive words, causing her to shift back up at her, where she stares for a second before her expression turns to a smile.

Gabi: "Heh, oh yeah, I'm gonna get justice alright, I'll make sure of it."

Meanwhile, Miche was sitting at a table with his two childhood friends, Nanaba and Gelgar, sitting around silently to themselves having finished their food.

Nanaba: "Ugh. I'm still starving. How was this supposed to fill anyone up?"

She says as she stares at her now empty bowl. Gelgar looks at his two comrades while he rests his head on his hand before speaking up.

Gelgar: "Let's just get some more bread then. They definitely have more."

Miche turns over to Gelgar and raises an eyebrow.

Miche: "Didn't you hear what they said? No seconds."

Gelgar's expression turned to a smirk after what Miche said. A mischievous one at that.

Gelgar: "Who said we were gonna ask for it?"

Nanaba and Miche stare at him for a second, but Miche then smiles along with Gelgar and stands up as he does. Gelgar looks down at Nanaba and speaks to her.

Gelgar: "You said you're still hungry, right?"

Nanaba stares at the two before sighing.

Nanaba: "You two are gonna be the end of me."

Despite her statement, Nanaba gets up too, always the most reluctant to participate in these foolish acts with them, but she does it anyway. Gelgar places his hand on her shoulder and chuckles.

Gelgar: "Maybe we will, but if we are, it's gonna be something that's worth it."

The trio then make their way from the table and towards the kitchen, ready to swipe some extra food.

Also meanwhile, Ilse, the notepad girl, was sitting by herself with her bowl of soup, barely even touching it. She's simply thinking about her embarrassment of an introduction today and is unwilling to even look at everyone else. However, she's spotted by a girl with long black hair and blue eyes, who just stares at her for a bit before approaching her.

Eliza: "Hey, notebook girl. Don't know if you noticed, but the people are over "here"."

She says as she taps her shoulder, causing Ilse to jolt and look up at her, dropping her spoon.

Ilse: "I-Uh- I'm sorry, I was just..."

The girl rolls her eyes and pushes her shoulder as a means to get her to stop stuttering.

Eliza: "Sorry for what? Just come over with us, idiot, nobody's thinking of that stupid incident besides yourself."

Ilse jolts as she's touched yet again, but she takes her words into consideration, and gulps before responding.

Ilse: "A-are you sure? So nobody's gonna... Look at me funny?"

The girl looks at Ilse before facepalming.

Eliza: "Oh my god, you really are a wuss, huh? No, nobody's gonna look at you funny. Nobody's gonna go up to you and give you a wedgie or something. Just come on and socialize, are you supposed to fight titans if you're scared shitless of humans?"

Ilse stares up at her silently. She was right. She did have to get to know her comrades. She swallows yet again and twiddles her thumbs.

Ilse: "Y-you're right... I'll go over with you guys."

Ilse takes her bowl and stands up, she then looks at the taller girl with puppy dog eyes.

Ilse: "Can I uh... Sit with you? You're the first person to actually talk to me..."

The girl stares at her with her eyes widened, but she goes back to her casual attitude.

Eliza: "Sure, I don't care."

Ilse: "Thank you."

Ilse says in response, then sighing as she walks with her to her table. As they do, Ilse looks up at her once again.

Ilse: "Oh, uh, I never caught your name. I'm Ilse Langnar."

The girl looks at Ilse once again, but then looks forward to the table before she responds.

Eliza: "Eliza. Eliza House."

The next day:

The next day, their training had started. Understanding how ODM gear worked was the first step.

The trainees hooked themselves onto wires attached to logs, their goal being to wobble around as little as possible. Some were fairing better than others.

Keith: "Oi, Zoe!!! The hell do you think you're doing?! Quite wobbling, this isn't a swing set!!!"

Keith shouts at Hange, who appears to be struggling very much with this first exercise.

Hange: "J-just give me a second, sarge! Just- trying to- get a hold of this- gagh!!!"

Immediately after Hange says that, they flip upside down, where they proceed to struggle to try and help themself up.

Hange: "Agh!!! Uh... Sorry, just give me a- uh...."

While Keith facepalmed and the cadets just stared, a few laughing at their misfortune, Erwin steps up to try and offer help.

Erwin: "Hange, are you stuck? Here, let me-"

Before he could even finish the sentence, Keith pushed him back with a stern look on his face.

Keith: "What do you think you're doing?! Nobody said it was your turn, runt!!!"

Erwin turns around to face Keith with an annoyed expression on his face, he's not intimidated by Shadis at all unlike everyone else.

Erwin: "They're stuck, they're clearly struggling to help themself up. It's our duty as soldiers to help our-"

Erwin is once again cut off by Shadis mid sentence.

Keith: "I'm sorry, did I ask for your take, shitlips? Do as you're told and stand back!! Unless you wanna spend the rest of your day running!!!"

Erwin glares at Shadis for a solid moment, before he reluctantly steps away from Hange. Despite Shadis's scolding, inside he's thinking to himself: "this kid was willing to step up to me for the sake of his friend. He may be disrespectful, but he's got guts."

Hange in the back is still struggling to lift back up, remaining dangling upside down. Despite the situation, they don't seem upset at all.

Hange: "Hehehe, it's- it's alright, Erwin! I got this! Just give me a bit more time and I'll have it down!"

Erwin stares at Hange with an expression of concern. He can tell this is gonna be a long 3 years.
