🚨 Chinese Flash Memory Giant YMTC Sues U.S. Defense Department Over Military Label
China’s leading flash memory manufacturer, Yangtze Memory Technologies Co. (YMTC), has taken legal action against the U.S. Defense Department, challenging its designation as a company linked to the Chinese military.
YMTC argues that its inclusion on the Pentagon’s list of “Chinese military companies” is inaccurate and based on outdated information. According to the company, the label has already caused major financial and reputational damage, including the loss of U.S. business partnerships.
YMTC says it has no ties to the PLA or China’s defense sector.
Claims its flash memory chips are commercial-grade only, not suitable for military applications.
Filed another lawsuit against the U.S. Commerce Department over 2022 export restrictions.
States it maintains a strong export compliance program with no violations ever cited by U.S. authorities.
The Pentagon added YMTC to its list in January 2024 and reaffirmed it this year.
YMTC argues the decision relies on incorrect, outdated information.
Other Chinese tech companies like DJI and Hesai Group have also faced — and challenged — similar U.S. designations.
This case could become a major precedent in the ongoing U.S.–China tech and semiconductor tensions.
