issues with kanoko's character & how to get it right

currently watching yuri is my job & can i just say, i am so incredibly frustrated with kanoko's character? (i've read a few volumes of the manga & she is the exact same way.)

the trope of the best friend having a crush on the mc IS TOTALLY FINE in my opinion. but kanoko is so controlling. whenever hime SLIGHTLY gets close to anyone, she immediately has to intervene!

in comparison: in whisper me a love song, aki also has a crush on the mc yori (who had a crush on hima), & she makes exactly ONE move on yori, & it's this one:

she's asking hima to stay away from yori bc hima isn't into yori (yet) but is still considering whether she could develop feelings for her. aki does this not only bc she has a crush on yori, but also bc she's worried that hima is playing with her best friend's feelings. even though it is still not her place (bc it's yori's decision to make), her actions make sense. this could be considered controlling, but i find it understandable.

kanoko on the other hand is so obsessive towards hime that i find it almost unredeemable. having so many (secret) photos of her is already problematic (but pretty much tame for a yuri manga, a lot of japanese fiction has issues with consent, not matter the genre). but she also tries to manipulate hime's relationships in the background, like when she convinces sumika to make yano lose the election for "blume", literally plotting against both hime & yano.

she later also reveals that she simply doesn't want hime to get close to anyone – giving total yandere vibes!

from the manga covers & bc it's an obvious arc, i know that she is going to get over her crush & develop feelings for sumika, but i literally can't WAIT for that to happen, bc she is literally SO invasive

11. linked pinkies + suonirei

The television screen flashes as a monstrous entity leaps towards the viewers, paired with a horrific noise that has Nirei’s throat squeezing around a scream. He buries himself even further under the blanket, eyes barely peeking over the edge while his heart thunders in his chest.

They’re all hanging out at Kiryu’s house after school today. Tsugeura suggested watching a horror movie as a way to test their bravery virtues or whatever, and Suo was fine with it, and Kiryu managed to egg Sakura into it too, so Nirei was too nervous to reject.

He’s sitting between Sakura and Suo right now, with the other two sprawled out on the carpet. Sakura’s reactions are bigger than any of them expected, and his shoulder keeps bumping into Nirei’s when he gets spooked, but he otherwise seems to be invested in the movie. And Suo has barely moved a muscle, sometimes even laughing at the scary scenes. Nirei might be the only one freaking out right now.

He gasps when Suo suddenly leans over, lips brushing against his ear as he whispers, “Are you alright, Nire-kun?”

Nirei’s cheeks burn at the low voice. He must not be subtle about his aversion to horror. His eyes dart to the side, but thankfully, no one is paying them any mind. With that, he turns back to give Suo a small nod.

Suo arches an eyebrow, as if to say, Are you sure? His hand shifts, crawling under the blanket that Nirei is using to hide, until it finally reaches his hand.

With a small, reassuring smile, Suo links their pinkies together before turning back to the screen.

Nirei doesn’t remember the rest of the movie after that.

“Can I really..?” Himari asks for what’s probably the third time that evening.

Yori laughs, tilting her head back. She can’t really see Himari from this angle, but she can imagine the expression she’s wearing either way—wide, hesitant eyes, lips twitching from how badly she’s trying to hide her enthusiasm.

“Yes. I trust you.”

“But— What if it looks bad? And then you go on stage with a horrible braid because of me? I think Kaori-san or Aki-san would be a better choice—”

“Himari,” she interrupts, and this time she really turns around so they may see eye-to-eye. Himari jerks back at the sound of her name, falling silent.

Yori leans forward. “You can create an absolute mess with my hair, and I’ll still go on stage because it was art made by your hands.”

Himari’s cheeks burst aflame. “That’s not really comforting…”

“It isn’t?”

“Nope.” Still, Himari seems revitalised, perhaps to prove that she can do better than ‘a mess’. She nudges Yori’s chin and she obediently turns back around, closing her eyes as she feels Himari’s fingers weaving through her hair. Slowly at first, but as time goes by, her movements grow more confident.

By the end of it, Yori has a beautiful braid falling over her shoulder and the sound of her girlfriend’s laughter ringing in her ears as she peppers her with kisses.
