Almost finished The Long Shadow about the Yorkshire Ripper murders. Really good. It does a great job of focusing on the women rather than the murderer and the appalling culture of misogyny running through every part of the police investigation

Good night to everyone except: 

 Members of the York shire police force in the 70′s who made up the idea of The Yorkshire Ripper killed only prostitutes'. Excluded a number of ripper attack survivors because they didn’t fit the “profile”. Made up that the first victim was a prostitute based on assumptions, which made it practically impossible to track it back to the killer.  All due to the misogyny placed in the people working the case.

the murder of sarah everard and the subsequent public/government response is so reminiscent of how folks completely fucked up the yorkshire ripper case for years. 

at one point, the police even instituted a curfew on WOMEN to “keep them safe” because that is somehow more rational, ethical, and legal than putting the curfew on men since, well, a MAN was the one doing the killing. 

remember that one viral post that asked women what they would do if all men were removed from the planet for 24 hours and sooooo many of them said “go out alone at night.” 

fuck all ya’ll for taking the stars away from women.

The Hunt for The Yorkshire Ripper: A series of horrifying murders that plagued working-class Britain during the '70s. Police sponsored billboards in order to seek the public's aid after letters and messages purportedly sent by the killer were received by authorities, earning him the moniker Wearside Jack due to his accent evident on audio missives, one of which featured a snippet from the song "Thank You For Being A Friend" by Andrew Gold, later to be covered as the theme song for "The Golden Girls" (?!). Resources were diverted away from Yorkshire when police became convinced that the murderer resided outside the killing zone. Many will claim that the hoax kept The Ripper free to kill for another two years before he was ultimately apprehended.

Twenty-fives years later, DNA would unmask the trickster as a crank named John Humble. He was sentenced to eight years in prison for obstruction of justice.

Anyone pissed about the attitudes towards sex workers in the Netflix docu-series “The Ripper” and the total disregard for the murder of women told as “prostitutes” so their murders were not perceived as innocent? Like you hate sex workers so much that any time they are murdered, they were part of their own demise.

Broadmoor Hospital

Broadmoor Hospital is a high-security psychiatric hospital located in Berkshire, England. It is the oldest of its kind. It is managed by the NHS.

First known as the Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum, the hospital was completed in 1863. The first patient was a female admitted for infanticide. The hospital was expanded over the years. During the first world war, Broadmoor was also used as a prison-of-war camp for mentally ill German soldiers.

After a high profile escape in 1952, the hospital set up an alarm system which alerts people nearby and in surrounding town if a potentially dangerous patient has escaped. All schools in the area were also instructed to ensure that if a patient escapes no child is ever out of direct supervision.

Broadmoor uses a combination of medication, psychotherapy and occupational therapy. Due to its high walls, security features and numbers of high profile criminals sent there, Broadmoor is sometimes, incorrectly, assumed to be a prison. It is, however, primarily an institute to support the mentally unwell rather than a prison.

Broadmoor's former and current patients include several high-profile criminals including Ronald Kray (one of the Kray twins), James Kelly (a Jack the Ripper suspect). serial killer Robert Napper and Peter Sutcliffe (also known as the Yorkshire Ripper).
