Shop analysis in York.
Priestleys is a second hand store that sells to both men and women. The store sell a lot of designer clothing and accessories but there is no set theme to the stock, it isn’t all vintage or all from a certain era so its a bit of a jumble.
layout: the layout of the store has rails of clothing running through the store and on the rails is little to no organisation of the stock. at the till is a glass cabinet counter which contains jewellery. above this is a wall of bags on display including and YSL bag. In one of the store windows are mannequins but in the other is just a rail of clothing.
Positioning of the store and visual merchandising: the store is located down an alley on Swinegate, if you are looking for this store it could be hard to find, you are more likely to stumble upon it by accident as it rather hidden. The front window had dressed mannequins in but were difficult to see clearly as there was a railing of clothing behind these.
Staff: the member of staff who worked there it was hard to tell if she wore an outfit based on the store as the store had such a variety inside. however, she was smartly dressed in a blazer and was friendly and chatty in conversation.
Online profile: priestleysvintage.co.uk I liked the set out online as it is presented as a blog for vintage heritage designer archive. The website does not sell products this is due to limited products so the blog demonstrates the fashion the store presents.
Shop analysis York
Molly Browns is a well known shop for its highs street availability in products like prom dresses or occasion wear for example, mother of the bride. It also makes casual wear like ballet pumps and jumpers.
Layout: the layout of this particular store was a organised yet cluttered store. compared to other stores this one crammed lots of stock into one room where as other stores went for a minimal effect. However, lots of products that were on display were styled with another garment or accessory, this is clever because it shows how to style the garment if bought but encourages other purchases too.
Positioning of the store and visual merchandising: the store was also on Stonegate so there was lots of competition for the store. in the store windows were sale signs and mannequins displaying garments available in store this advertises that a discount can be got in store and will persuade customers to go into store as they will feel like they will get a better deal on products.
Staff: the staff member here was busy with tasks behind the counter but was friendly if you went to talk and asked questions, this is a common theme with different types of retail stores.
Online profile: www.mollybrowns.co.uk Easy to navigate online and sells products that are not necessarily instore- there is a larger range of dresses and brands and even categories to shop in.

L.K Bennett is another high end store that sells a range of woman’s clothing, shoes and accessories. The style is classy and can be dressed up for office wear or dressed down for casual wear.
layout: the store was organised into collections and sections, it had different walls for different departments. For example there was a wall for shoes at the back of the room, a wall for jackets, a wall for dresses and a section for handbag. Generally speaking there wasn’t much in terms of rails of stock in the centre of the room - creating an open plan layout. In the centre of the room were seats to try on shoes and reduced stock of shoes.
positioning and visual merchandising: this store was positioned on one of the main high streets of York, on Stonegate. And had lots of competition with other fashion retailers along this particular street. Again booklets with current season stock and next season stock in was displayed for free on tables and at the counter or the store. There was also visual promotions labels on certain products.
Staff: the staff here were less approachable than shops like the boutique this was because there were more jobs to be completed like restocking and serving more customers at anyone time. The staff were not dressed in L.K Bennet they were simply dressed in black.
Online profile: L.K Bennet online store is similar to store, it is organised in collections and has inspiration pages for current / next season trends.

Bridal Rogue Gallery is a wedding dress shop that has a variety of dresses in store with a range of styles and designers. It had a couple of child bridesmaid dresses but otherwise specialised in bridal gowns and accessories.
layout of the store: as you entered the store there was a table in font with leaflets and fresh flowers on it, this gave a clean scent and an edge to the room. there was a row of dresses along one wall and opposite was a dresser with shoes and other accessories on it, these included clips, bags and jewellery. Then on the left was an archway where lots of other bridal gowns were kept.
Positioning of the store and visual merchandising: It is just of the main hight street on Swinegate. It is the only bridal shop in that immediate area. Interestingly it only displayed one dress in the shop window, unlike all other shops we had visited that displayed multiple outfits and garments this store displayed one with accessories.
Staff: there was only one woman on as staff when we visited the store, she was dressed in a smart/casual outfit so she was stylish and professional.she was friendly and approachable and helpful about where to go for good shops.
Online profile: www.bridalroguegallery.co.uk This has previous gowns and successes from other brides . It also shows locations of the stores and social media access.

Sahara is a high end boutique, it is also a family owned business that sells casual and work wear. Its clothing is classy, timeless and modest so would appeal to different generations of people.
Layout: there was a colour and collection order to the stock inside the store. generally it was quite minimalist in its set up, this gave some elegance to the store. As a boutique it was distinctive it had seating at both ends of the store and a very spacious changing room area where mirrors and lighting were the main feature, in a way the store was split into two parts, part A had the clothing collections and till and part B had changing rooms and seating. Sahara was also decorated in a classy clean -cut way it had bright lighting and stylish chairs.
Positioning of the store and visual merchandising:the store was down Swinegate and had little competition in similar shops. the shop window had mannequins promoting the current collections in store which would draw people to the store showing product availability. in-store there were also booklets promoting current season collections in store and online.
Staff: the staff here also wore clothing from the store which made them look professional and smart when serving customers. Staff were also friendly and engaged with us asking about our research this made us feel welcomed into store. Also, they spoke fondly, highly and expressing lots of passion about the family owned store, this was also refreshing to see as lots of people who work in retail rarely have passion for the job.
Online profile: www.saharalondon.com This site shows clothing ready to buy bought now and designers and even a journal. The site is similar to store it is clean and elegantly laid out .

Here is Dog and Bone, this second hand vintage -retro style shop has so much character and shows this through its layout, styles and music.
layout: the overall look of this store was shabby chic, it used creative methods for displaying products these included crates, wire shelves old dressers and even up-cycled suit cases. The main lighting was also interesting as it was resting in antlers from the ceiling this was both decorative and functional. The layout of the shop had been set up into sections this is due to the limited stock of a second hand store however, it gave character to the store.
Positioning of the store and visual merchandising: this store was well placed at Coppergate centre this is because lots of people will naturally walk past the shop window as it is on the way into the centre of York from the Castle museum car park. Due to potential customers walking past the shop window it has to be attention grabbing. The blue paint and interesting dressed mannequins with vintage radios and other electronics does in deed gain intrigue of the general public.
Staff: the staff here were super friendly and approachable and dressed in clothes bought or inspired by the shop mainly consisting of jeans and a patterned shirt of some kind. Generally speaking this would help promote the store especially on commuting to and from work.
Online profile: dogandbonevintage.com This site has lots of good reviews. Helpful information like opening hours pricing and location. There is also a blog on this site this gives the store a chance to promote what they have without having to have multiples of the garments they collect.
