“The Genpei war”, Utagawa Yoshitora (active from 1850 to 1880)
The Genpei war lasted from 1180 to 1185 and opposed the Minamoto clan to the Taira. The two women warriors depicted here are Yamabuki Gozen (in the middle, on the black horse) and Tomoe Gozen (riding the white horse on the right). They served Minamoto no Yoshinaka.

“Battle from the Taiheiki” (1866), Utagawa Yoshitora (active from 1850 to 1880)
The “Taiheiki” is a 14th century Japanese chronicle, exploring the tumultuous years following the collapse of the Kamakura shogunate. This print depicts a battle in the precinct of a palace. Several women are joining the fight : one is leaping from the veranda, sword in hand. Another dies, hit by an arrow while another is blocking the gate with her naginata and another is ready to kill the man she’s grabbing. There are others, though. Will you find them all ?
