My Fight- Your Fight

Tony knew that Ziva was still looking for Bodnar. He'd caught on over the last week, starting when Abby had come to him, worried out of her mind at how "busy" Ziva had been. It was true, he knew. She had seemed a bit more preoccupied lately. 

One morning, he happened to come in a little earlier from work, and when he got there, she was already sitting at her desk, staring intently at a video. Because she didn't immediately notice his presence, he was able to get a glimpse of what she was looking at. There, in surveillance footage from early February, was Ilan Bodnar. 

He sighed, and she jumped, turning around to him, her eyes wide. Nothing was said for a long moment, because what was she supposed to say, after all? There was no denying what she was doing. 

Tony felt like his heart was in his throat when he finally spoke. "Why didn't you tell you were still looking?" 

"Why did you assume that I ever stopped?" she shot right back, raising an eyebrow defensively. 

"Ziva." He sighed her name. "Don't." 

"I need to." Her voice was quiet. "He killed my father. He killed... Jackie." 

"But why are you doing it alone?" he emphasized. "I know that you're going to do this, but I thought we had established that you shouldn't be going down this road by yourself." 

"It is my problem." She was putting up defenses quickly, and he knew he had to get in before she shut him out completely. 

"Ziva." His voice was soft- only she heard it. 

"He... He was the last of my family, Tony. This is my fight. I will do... whatever it takes to avenge him. I have nothing left to lose." 

"That isn't true. What about us?" He gestured to the squad room. "And even Ziva... Even if you really believe you don't have anything else left to lose, I do. You. I can't lose you, Ziva. Please, don't do anything risky without me or... even if it isn't me... just don't do it alone. Because I don't know what I'd do if I lost you again." 

She swallowed, and he felt like he'd gotten through this time. "But it is my fight, Tony. You should not have to-" 

"Your fight is my fight. We're partners, and you're... you're my best friend. Anything that affects you automatically affects me, too. You should know that by now." 

She paused for the longest moment, looking up at him as if assessing what she should do, how she should take his words. Finally, she stood, nodding.. "I'm sorry... that I didn't tell you. And I promise... if I plan to do anything, I will let you know." 

He reached up, letting his thumb brush across her cheek. Her eyes widened, but she didn't pull away, and he smiled. "That's all I ask."

It’s the end of another taxing case, and the entire team is worn out. Tony notices that Ziva looks particularly exhausted, so he offers to bring dinner over after they’ve both had the chance to go home and shower. Ziva nods after a moment of deliberation, and both of them are smiling as they leave the bullpen.

When Tony lets himself into Ziva’s apartment later, he teasingly says, “Honey, I’m home!”

She doesn’t respond, and he pushes down a flare of panic.

“Ziva, are you here?” he calls out, putting down the pizza box he’s brought with him. As he walks toward the closed bedroom door, he does a quick visual sweep of the living room. It looks as it always does, and he feels a bit better.

Knocking softly, he warns, “Ziva, it’s me,” and after another moment, turns the doorknob to reveal the woman in question sprawled out on her bed, asleep in a fluffy bathrobe. He huffs with quiet laughter and goes to her side.

“Zi-va, wake up,” he says, drawing out the vowels in her name. He begins stroking her hair and says, “Come on, ninja, it’s dinner time.”

Finally she stirs, and he almost regrets having to wake her up from such a deep sleep. God knows she needs it, he thinks.

Ziva blinks blearily at him and points to the dresser.

“What? Oh, right,” Tony says, grabbing a t-shirt and sweatpants and bringing them back over. He scrunches up the shirt so the neck and sleeves are easier to get through, and holds it out to her. Ziva unties her bathrobe, and Tony helps her get the shirt and pants on.

They talk about Paris over pizza and beer, and soon after that, all clothes are discarded.
