So all the “Young’s” die an early death and it seems like they all will die to war crimes (Robb/Young Wolf at the Red Wedding, Daeron/Young Dragon under a flag of truce, Aegon/Young Griff more than likely after surrender his forces surrender) How do you think Harry/Young Falcon is going to meet his end?
Hi there!
This ask reminded me that there is another Young X to consider, and he fits this pattern.
It had been years since his last vigil. And I was younger then, a boy of fifteen years. He had worn no armor then, only a plain white tunic. The sept where he'd spent the night was not a third as large as any of the Great Sept's seven transepts. Jaime had laid his sword across the Warrior's knees, piled his armor at his feet, and knelt upon the rough stone floor before the altar. When dawn came his knees were raw and bloody. "All knights must bleed, Jaime," Ser Arthur Dayne had said, when he saw. "Blood is the seal of our devotion." With dawn he tapped him on the shoulder; the pale blade was so sharp that even that light touch cut through Jaime's tunic, so he bled anew. He never felt it. A boy knelt; a knight rose. The Young Lion, not the Kingslayer. But that was long ago, and the boy was dead. (AFFC, Jaime I)
This Young Lion, too, died in a crime, if you will: Jaime killed him by killing his king. Though in all honesty he died long before that if he ever lived. Jaime thinks of his knighthood as quite divorced from his other choices even before Aerys. His sordid relationship with Cersei, his lie to Tyrion and the crime against Tysha that followed - were those the actions of a "boy", washed away by his rise to knighthood? Was he ever a true knight if he never questioned himself? Jaime hates the name Kingslayer, but what did the Young Lion ever do but ignore the suffering of innocents in the name of duty?
Robb too "killed the boy" long before his actual death, harrassing the smallfolk of the Westerlands, freezing out his mother's advice and the plight of his sisters - married to his sword. He was the Young Wolf - but like Jaime, he couldn’t live up to the promise enshrined in that name. And the Young Dragon - a boy responsible for the death of thousands, dead before long and his "achievements" falling apart - enough said.
There’s a curse of failure attached to that nickname more than mere death by betrayal. They are young forever because they never get to finish what they started.
The curious thing about Young Griff and the Young Falcon is that both nicknames are erroneously applied. Neither are griffin or falcon in truth. Aegon is a dragon and the sun’s son. Harry is a checkered tablecloth (House Hardyng) several links removed from the last falcon ancestor. Quartering the Arryn falcon in his coat of arms is an arrogant overstep that banks on the death of a child.
Both will fail to live up to the expectation placed on the nickname - for Aegon those would be the expectations of all those who made him “Young Griff” to fulfill their plans, for Harry the expectation to actually inherit.
Both are likely to die, too. Aegon’s death seems entirely inevtiable but whether it involves parley or surrender or a fiery battle, it will be a crime, either way. He is the rightful Targaryen heir - or he is the king by popular acceptance based on his achievements before Dany’s arrival. Dany killing him will have no righteous angle, and his death will end all dreams of a Targaryen restoration.
Harry...
When Robert dies, Harry the Heir becomes Lord Harrold, Defender of the Vale and Lord of the Eyrie. Jon Arryn's bannermen will never love me, nor our silly, shaking Robert, but they will love their Young Falcon . . . (AFFC, Alayne II)
When the boy dies, the Young Falcon is born. Except the one won’t, so neither will the other.
I imagine his death - which is probable - will be less of a betrayal (unless Lyonel Corbray goes rogue) and more of a mirror to the death of Ser Hugh at the Hand’s Tourney. Inexperience, perhaps even arrogance will meet reality, and put a sudden end to what was supposed to be a promising future. Though he does have the benefit of Sansa’s best wishes: "I pray he proves a worthy knight." So my guess is that his death will perchance be noble in its own way, like Aegon’s is likely to be. Like Waymar Royce’s.
Hey do you think sweetrobin will die? Bcoz everyone is saying he will die bcoz of sweetsleep. I think harry bcoming heir of vale is like his dream comes true. SR can be spoiled n weak but still is innocent n it's like with his death house arryn will die. Harry is more doomed. Young Griff, young dragon, young wolf n young falcon. Everyone is putting bets on him. Wat do you think?
Hi there!
Actually, I would love for Sweetrobin to survive. I know he is spoiled, but I think he would have had a good chance to turn out a decent guy with Sansa’s help.... I would love for him to survive as a final “fuck your plans, evil Littlefinger.” I would love for him to ‘longbottom’ out of his spindly look and become a decent, good-looking young man... You know, just like in the show.... People would look at him and think: Well, doesn’t he look like a catch....
Unfortunately, that is very unlikely. You said it yourself: Young Dragon and Young Wolf inherited early, came, saw and conquered, and died early. It is highly likely that Young Griff (fAegon or maybe even real Aegon, a theory I like more and more) will die in a war with Daenerys and that would mean that the Young Falcon is doomed as well. But if the parallels have any meaning he has to inherit first and be successful. If he inherits, Sweetrobin has to die. I suspect he will die prematurely, before Littlefinger’s plans are ripe even. I’ve talked about this. I don’t think Littlefinger wants Sweetrobin dead just yet. (x)
But I think Littlefinger’s plans will blow up in his face and Sansa will have to flee the Vale and head North, possibly trying to escape her marriage to the Young Falcon. Sweetrobin wants to protect Sansa and that means he will probably die.
There is just one thing I am sure about: Sansa will not be to blame for Sweetrobin’s death. She is not poisoning him.
But wouldn’t it be nice if Sweetrobin would grow up to be fairly decent, even if a bit ailing, and if he would live to see old age, ninety something? And each year he would walk to Littlefinger’s grave, do a little dance and spit on it...
Not going to happen, but we can dream....
Thanks for the ask!
Henlo frens, can I make se sportz here in ur privat gym too ?
Sansa x Harry the Heir
We need more fanfics of these two
What is Harrold's story in TWOW ? I think the moniker of 'Young' is a straight foreshadowing for his death. Or will GRRM try to subvert by having him live .
Hi anon!
I do suspect Harry is going to die in battle in the North. He comes along with the Vale army, is a contender for Sansa’s (as of yet unavailable because still married) hand and then dies, leaving the Vale Lords lurching because Sweetrobin is still too young and frail to rule but they all hate Littlefinger. This will eventually tie them closer to Sansa after LF is tried and executed, likely through the Royce’s and through her good relationship with Robin.
But your idea does have merit? As in, Harry is so presumptuous to bear that nickname “Young Falcon” and he doesn’t even get to have the tragic early death. He’ll just fade into obscurity.
Wouldn’t it be so hilarious if Sweetrobin simply refused to die and Harry’s importance just plumetted when others could no longer profit from his anticipated inheritance? He’s a Hardying, which is a House so prestigious their arms are… red and white diamonds. Essentially a checkered tablecloth. BORING. They don’t even have a sigil, or a named seat. They are nobodies.
He’d be GRATEFUL for a low-born rich merchant’s daughter like Saffron to marry him and bring some money and business sense into House Hardyng.
Seriously, I would not hate it.
I think harry will likely to become head of house arryn and Lord of vale before dying. Just like daeron, Robb and aegon vi became king before dying or upcoming death. Maybe Robin goes into coma or become incapable to rule. If harry become Lord than why he would marry alayne?
Hi anon!
I don’t know if that is possible. I mean, Sweetrobin is for all intents and purposes currently unable to rule, because he is a little boy, which is the only reason Littlefinger is Lord Protector in the first place. It is the only reason Harry has any relevance at all, too. People treat Robert Arryn as if he is a walking corpse. At best, they are treating him as a “Jon’s little boy” figurehead similarly to “Arya” in Winterfell or Manderly’s quest to find Rickon.
Sweetrobin doesn’t really need to become even more incapable than he already is, his power is entirely nominal.
Harry, however, cannot officially become Lord of the Vale or the actual successor (as opposed to heir) unless Sweetrobin is actually dead.
I’m pretty sure that Harry’s “Young Falcon” is a curse because it is so arrogantly premature. Daeron was a proper dragon (let’s all spit on his grave) and Robb a proper wolf (good boy), but Harry is no kind of falcon, or rather he is a super distantly related one. Just as “Young Griff” is no kind of griffin at all. He is a real dragon, and he is the sun’s son. And while the name is still a curse, it is a cover for the real thing, a real king.
In a way, they are all foils. The brutal conqueror of Dorne v. Elia’s beloved son. The young invader of an independent kingdom v. the young king fighting for independence. The young wolf, crowned by his people’s will, v. an heir biding his time waiting for a child to die or an exile coming with an army. The philandering father of bastard children v. the king who lost it all to save a girl’s honor. They do not all need to be kings in order for their similarities and contrasts to shine bright.
