A/N Okay so I started this fic for Mitch Week but it took me ages to write as I didn't want to rush it or skip past parts so I have decided to do multiple parts. So this is my Mitch Week fic @stilinski-jpeg and @minhosmeanhoe I hope you enjoy it. Plus huge thanks to @mf-despair-queen for helping me come up with the idea for it. And @maddie110201 for telling me it's not shit and to keep going with it.
P.s I'm shit at grammar so apologies for any mistakes :)
So again enjoy !!!
You knew your dad was tired. You had been driving for over 6 hours, and you knew he wouldn’t take a break as he was far too stubborn to pull over. You only had an hour left to drive but it was getting later. You were driving back from your aunt's house but had left a little too late. You should have stayed another night and drove home in the morning. But your dad insisted you left tonight. You felt your eyes start to droop as you rested your head against the window frame. It had been a long day and all you wanted to do was crawl into your warm bed and sleep. You had drifted off for a few minutes but you were awoken with a jolt as you felt the car start to sway.
After that everything happened so fast your car had slammed into the side of another vehicle. The car bounced off the other vehicle and sent you spiraling down a banking. You struggled to open your eyes as you felt a warm liquid trickle down your face. You were upside down. You clambered to unclip the seat belt but it wouldn't budge. Your breathing started getting faster and you started to panic. Your head feeling like it was spinning as a wave of dizziness overtook you. You tried once more to unclick the seat belt. A shooting pain running through your body as you slammed against the roof. You groaned trying to look at your dad but he wasn't in the car. You could hear the sirens ringing in the distance as you let out a high pitched scream that turned to loud sobs. You were so scared. Where was your dad? Was he okay? Were you okay? What happened with the other car? Your mind had gone into overdrive and you were in excruciating pain all over. That's when it all went black.
Your eyes blinked again a body hanging over you. “You're going to be alright sweetheart, can you tell me your name”
“Y/N” you struggled out.
“Good. Okay Y/N I’m Shannon I'm a paramedic and I'm gonna get you the help you need okay?”
You nodded to her as the darkness once again consumed you.
The next thing you could remember was waking up in the hospital. Your arms were all connected to wires and tubes and your body ached all over. You tried calling for the nurse but your voice was too weak and all you could do was lie there. A nurse had walked into your room a couple of minutes after. Seeing that your eyes were open she did her daily checks and asked if you were alright. She then told you that the doctor would be in to see you shortly. 10 minutes later the doctor arrived.
“Good morning Y/N, how are you feeling?” she asked politely.
“Sore" you grumbled.
“Okay Y/N well I'm Dr. Kingston I've been looking after you here. What is the last thing you remember”
“ehm …” you croaked as you cleared your throat.
"My dad and I were on our way home from my aunt's house. I was tired so I took a nap. I remember being woken as the car was swaying and that's when we got the other car. Next thing I know I'm waking up in here and talking to you.” you had a quick look around realizing you haven't seen your dad since you had awakened. The doctor looked at you knowingly as if she knew exactly what you were going to ask.
“Dr. Kingston where is my dad” She looked at you solemnly.
“Y/N the accident you were in was really bad. You've been here in the ICU with us for 6 weeks. You had serious head injuries as well as a cracked rib that had punctured your lung. The doctors did everything they could and it looks like you are recovering well. You will be sore still for another few weeks and we are going to keep you in another couple of days for observations. However, since you are awake and talking there are a few people that would like to talk to you.”
“People like who Dr? And why aren't you telling me where my dad is" You were starting to get annoyed. Why wouldn't they tell you where he was?
Another hour had passed by and still, no one had approached your room. Hundreds of questions racing through your mind. You were beginning to lose hope of ever getting any answers when a tall blonde woman and a police officer stepped into your room. Your nurse trailing behind.
“Y/N these are the people that would like to ask you a few questions okay? This is Dr. Elliot” she said as she gestured to the blonde woman. “And this is Sergeant Scott” she gestured to the police officer that took a step closer to your bed.
You had been in the ICU for 6 weeks before you had woken up. You had to stay in an extra few weeks after for observations and for all the paperwork to go through. The accident had killed your dad as the collision had sent him flying through the windscreen. You were fourteen and your mother had died in childbirth so your dad was all you had. Now you had no one. The woman you spoke to on the first day you woke up was from social services. She was there to tell you that you were being placed into foster care until you reached the legal age to leave. The people in the other vehicle did not make it either. You were the only survivor and that made you feel like shit. You know you couldn’t have helped it you weren’t driving but you could have made your dad pull over to rest. That’s what had caused the accident, he had fallen asleep at the wheel. You felt so guilty and it had been made even worse when you found out that the people that had died had a son around your age.
You stared out the window as the car pulled up in front of a big modern styled boarding house. You sighed, this was going to be your home from now until you turned 18. Four years, you only had to wait four years and then you could leave. You grabbed your stuff out of the boot of the car, you didn't have very much so your suitcase wasn't big. You were left some money by your dad so you thought you'd buy some more stuff when you got there. You climbed the steps to the front door of the house with Janet, the foster carer, by your side. As soon as you were in the hallway Janet screeched your arrival to the other children. She introduced you to all the other children. Your eyes instantly locking onto a boy that looked around your age standing in the corner. He had dark soft looking hair and whiskey colored eyes and moles spattered across his pale face. You were snapped out of your daze as Janet called him over.
“Y/N this is Mitch he's only been here a few weeks. He lost his parents in a car crash too.” You looked up at him with sad eyes.
“Hi”
“Hello” he replied. He looked almost like you felt. Devastated.
You quickly became friends bonding over the loss you had both experienced. You hung out almost every day and spent all your free time together. Most nights you would sneak into each other's rooms either you reading to him or just cuddling up together. He would stay with you and save you from the nightmares you would have about the crash. You were lying on your bed reading the next chapter of your book when a light rapping noise sounded on your door.
“Come in”
“Hey Y/N/N I brought your movies back. The Notebook sucks by the way” Mitch laughed as he popped his head round the door. He threw the DVD cases onto your desk as he jamp onto your bed.
“Whatcha reading?” he asked grabbing the book from your hand flipping the pages to read the front cover.
“Hmm, The Maze Runner. I've never read it. Maybe you could read it to me one day?”
“I could read it to you now if you want” you smiled as you looked up to him.
“I'd love that” he pulled himself up on the bed and laid his head on your stomach. You flicked the pages back to the very start and began reading the first chapter to him.
“He began his new life standing up, surrounded by cold darkness and stale, dusty air. Metal ground against metal; a lurching shudder shook the floor beneath him. He fell down at the sudden movement and shuffled backward on his hands and feet, drops of sweat beading on his forehead despite the cool air. His back struck a hard metal wall; he slid along it until he hit the corner of the room. Sinking to the floor, he pulled his legs up tight against his body, hoping his eyes would soon adjust to the darkness.”
You had managed to read 4 chapters before you realized Mitch had fallen asleep on you. You contemplated waking him up but he looked so peaceful. You folded the page over on the part you were on and placed the book on your nightstand. Turning the bedside lamp off and closing your eyes. You fell into a deep slumber with Mitch resting up against you.
You were in your dad's car driving along a busy highway. Your eyes tired and unfocused. You blinked and looked towards the driver's side of the car seeing your dad with cuts and scratches on his face, blood dripping from the wounds.
“Dad??” You whimpered.
The car lunged forward your dad flying through the windscreen.
“DAD!!!” you screamed. The car started to roll and you were bashed off of every part of the car. Your entire body ached as you dragged yourself out of the car.
“HELP!!” you screamed again but no one stopped or replied. The road was empty other than the car you had hit. Everything was dead silent. Fear taking over your body. You blinked again 3 people now standing in front of you. Your dad and another couple just staring at you. They all looked severely hurt blood dripping from every injury.
“this is all your fault!” The man said as he pointed his finger at you.
“You did this. You're the reason we're all dead” your dad yelled as he took a step closer to you. He had backed you up against the car fear racing through your veins.
“You did this” your dad shouted again.
“no” you cried
“No this wasn't me” the sobs racked through your body shaking you completely.
“Y/N…..Y/N You're alright, it's alright I'm here.” Mitch cooed as he pulled you into his chest. You were sobbing loudly now clinging onto his shirt. His hand smoothed over your back rubbing circles trying to calm you down. He whispered soothing things to you until you had finally caught your breath and had stopped crying.
“You're alright” he cooed once more as he lifted your chin to look at him.
“You wanna tell me what happened?” he asked continuing to rub circles on your back.
“Not right now… please, can you just hold me” you sniffed pulling yourself back into his embrace.
“Of course Y/N/N”
You lay there the rest of the night just curled into Mitch’s chest listening to his shallow breaths and watching his chest rise and fall.
As the sun rose the next morning you felt the weight of not having much sleep hanging on your shoulders. Your head felt heavy and your eyes hurt. You didn't know if that was the lack of sleep or the amount of crying you had done. You pulled yourself out of bed careful not to wake Mitch. You slipped into the bathroom to take a quick shower before you got dressed for the day. After you were showered and dressed you quietly stepped back into your room finding Mitch lying awake on your bed.
“Morning” he smiled as he sat up to look at you.
“Morning Mitch” you smiled back as you placed your towel onto your drying rack.
You walked over to him and perched on your side of the bed. His arm reached over to stroke your arm soothingly.
“You ready to talk about it" he asked softly trying not to pressure you into telling him.
You swallowed thickly and nodded your head.
“It was my dad” you said as you looked towards the floor. You could already feel the tears brimming in your eyes. It had been 3 years since the accident but every nightmare you had dragged you straight back to that night. It always made you feel like it had only just happened. Mitch was always there for you. You could never tell him the full story it always hurt you too much. You hated the fact your dad had caused someone else's death.
“He blamed me… he was stood there with the people he hit and they all blamed me. I could have stopped it, Mitch. I could have saved them. Saved him.” You couldn't hold it back anymore and again like always you broke down. You couldn't tell Mitch that your dad had fallen asleep and it was his fault that 3 people had died. It was your fault you should have made your dad stop. It always hung over you that you could have prevented it all. As you broke down Mitch instantly wrapped his arms around you.
“I'm so sorry Y/N" he sighed.
“This isn't your fault”
After that night 3 other occasions occurred where you had this very same nightmare and you ended up the same way every time. Curled into Mitch's arms him asking if you wanted to talk about it, you breaking down even more. At that point, Mitch had stopped asking and just comforted you instead. You wanted to confide in him. To tell your best friend, your crush, maybe even your soul mate what had happened and what was going on but you couldn't stop yourself from breaking down every single time.
You lay on the patio swing head in Mitch’s lap as you read another chapter of The Maze Runner to yourself. It was a sunny day so you were just relaxing out in the garden. Mitch was sat slouched with his head resting against the back of the swing his arm resting on you. His eyes closed as the sun beamed down on him. At this point, you were so content just lying there in silence. You looked up from your book every so often just to stare at your beautiful best friend. He peeked his eyes open a little catching you staring. He opened his eyes full and smiled down at you. He held your gaze like you were the only person in the world. So you sat up on your elbows to get a better look at him.
“What?” you giggled.
He didn't reply he just leaned forward and gently pressed his lips to yours. The kiss had so much passion and love. He truly cared for you the way you did for him. Your heart was thumping against your chest as he pulled away and leaned his forehead against yours.
“sorry Y/N, I've just wanted to do that for so long”
You smiled at him and curled back into his lap.
“Me too” you whispered. You saw the grin spread on his lips.
A few more moments of silence passed as you just lay with each other.
“Y/N you know I'm leaving right?” Mitch said breaking the silence that had engulfed you.
“ I turn 18 next week so no longer need to be here. I wish you could come with me. I don't want to go anywhere without you.”
You sighed sitting up completely. You knew you were gonna have to have this talk eventually.
“I know Mitch but I turn 18 in a month and when that happens you won't have to be without me.” You smiled at him resting your hand on his cheek. You pulled him in for a quick kiss leaning your head on his shoulder once you had pulled away.
“I was hoping you would say that.”
The rest of the week had gone by so quickly and you were dreading waking up to have to say goodbye to Mitch. Your eyes fluttered open as you hand searched across the cold sheets looking for a warm body. When they couldn't find him your eyes shot open and you had sat bolt upright. Mitch had never left the bed before you had woken up. Panic soared through you. Did he not want to say goodbye. Did he just leave so he wouldn't have to endure the heartbreak of leaving? You could feel tears start to well up in your eyes as Mitch burst through your bedroom door.
“Oh good you're awake I have something to tell you.” He smiled as he jumped back into bed wrapping his arms around you and pulling you in tight. You sighed a little in relief glad you would have a chance to say goodbye to him. The thought of that made you feel sick to your stomach. But you brushed it off at looked to Mitch to get him to continue what he had to say.
“I spoke to Janet and she has agreed to let me stay here until you turn 18 so we can leave together” you squealed before he even had the chance to finish. You were so happy. You started to place sloppy kisses all over Mitch's face.
“Oh, Mitch I am so happy. I'm so glad we'll be able to leave together.” That night you spent it together watching movies and eating junk just to celebrate. You had never been happier.
Your birthday was edging closer and your trust in Mitch had grown so strong. You decided that now was the time to tell him everything. To finally get this heartbreak off you chest so he could help heal you from it. You had asked him to meet you outside on the garden swing. You sat waiting for him legs swinging as you grew more and more nervous. You were so caught up in nerves you didn’t even notice Mitch sit down until he placed his hand on top of yours.
“Y/N are you alright”
“Yeah, Mitch I'm fine… it’s just” you stuttered the nerves taking over.
“What’s wrong?” Mitch asked concern lacing his face.
“My dad fell asleep at the wheel” you blurted out.
“What?” Mitch looked even more confused. He wrapped his arm around your shoulder and began to rub up and down to try to comfort you.
“The night of the accident…. we were driving along the highway just before the Route 6 junction. My dad was tired, we had been driving for hours. I thought about asking him to pull over but I knew he would be stubborn. So I just left him. He ended up falling asleep at the wheel and crashing side on into another car….. Mitch the couple in the car had a son he wasn’t in the car but they both died. My dad killed two people Mitch and it was all my fault” You had fallen completely to piece telling this to Mitch. His arm was still around you but his movements had halted. You looked up at him scared to see his reaction. He just stared blankly off into the space in front of him tears welling in his eyes. You were really sobbing now his arm lifting slowly off of you. You had made a mistake you shouldn’t have told him. He had stood up at looked towards you.
“When was this? What date?” He asked quietly as he looked anywhere but at you.
“Why what does it matter Mitch. My dad killed someone and I could have stopped it.”
You could see the anger boiling on his face and you couldn’t understand why.
“Why! Why does it matter Y/N? Hmm because your dad killed my parents that’s why!” He shouted, scaring you as he had never so much as raised his voice at you.
“I should have known, you coming here not long after I did, your dad killed in a car accident too. Fuck! I should have known this was all your fault!!” He screamed the last part at you before he stormed away from you. His words hit you like a tonne of bricks more tears pouring from your face. You ran from the garden seat straight up to your room slamming the door in the process. All you could do was cry. You had lost everything your world had just come crumbling down and you could do nothing about it. All night you spend crying and crying until you couldn’t cry anymore. You lay on your bed eyes aching as they slowly began to shut exhaustion taking over you.
This time there wasn’t just 3 people standing in front of you there was 4. Your dad, Mitch’s parents and Mitch. He looked at you with such disgust the same hurl of abuse came from your dad and from the couple but you couldn’t take your eyes off Mitch. He walked towards you slowly him being the one to pin you up against the car. You were sobbing “Mitch I'm so sorry please believe me I am so sorry” but he didn’t listen to a word you said instead he leaned in close to you and whispered in your ear “This is all your fault! You should have died in that accident too.”
His words ripped you apart as he backed up and walked away from you. “No!” you screamed. “Mitch please.”
You sat bolt upright sobs racking your body. This nightmare was the worse one you had. The words Mitch had whispered to you stuck in your mind like a bad song. You needed his comfort, for him to tell you everything was going to be alright. But he hated you he blamed you for everything. You had walked through to your bathroom to grab a glass of water hoping it would calm you down and to stop the sobs from escaping you. You took the glass from the counter your hands shaking violently. You cried harder seeing your reflection in the mirror you couldn’t even look at yourself as all you saw was a disappointment. The glass slipped from your hand smashing against the cold tiles. You lay your body down on the cold floor more sobs wracking through you. You were such a mess everything good in your life had just been torn from you. Your eyes slowly closed leaving you to sleep on the cold tear stained tiles of your bathroom floor.
Again there will be more parts you just have to be patient with me :)
