Festival of Contemporary Music Review by Jean Michael
The open rehearsal in festival of contemporary music at Kings place was performed by an ensemble of young musicians and adults all coming together to play music. As you enter the venue you can see many people doing several activities such as eating and listening to music. However, as you go downstairs you can hear music played by ensembles for the entertainment. The concert was in a very small room; the capacity was small. The ensemble played three pieces; ‘Wild echoes’ by Howard Jones and ‘Playing the pulse’ by Andrew Poppy and ‘the four nightmares’ which are 4 pieces about 4 stages of a nightmare. ‘Wild echoes’ is a piece imitating the sounds of animals in a woodland.
‘Playing the pulse’ is a minimalist piece full of complex and repetitive melodies. All three pieces gave excellent atmosphere which was very different from each other. I think that the pieces were played very well and despite the very complex melodies in ‘playing the pulse’ the whole ensemble was together. If I were to change anything about the open rehearsal it would be the decoration of the venue and the capacity of the room in which the music was played because the room had a very small capacity and not many people were able to find the room. The overall experience however was very joyful as the music was very different to the kind of music that is normally heard in concerts.
Dance Dance Revolution Review by Jean Michael
Dance Dance Revolution was a concert made by the tri – borough young producers. As you enter Wigmore hall you are warmly welcomed by two amazing dancers in the hallway. Giving the atmosphere of the elegance of classical music. The hall was filled, all waiting for the violinist Maria Wloszczowska and pianist Alasdair Beatson.
They played several pieces from the baroque (1600 – 1760) and the classical period (1730 – 1820). The pieces played were very expressive, the lighting fit the mood of the music very well. The execution of the pieces went very well, both musicians played the pieces extremely well. I felt engaged with the music as it was very interesting to hear the sound of both violin and piano and what kind of sound they can make together. As they ended their last piece the audience was astounded. If I would change anything about the concert I would change some of the music. Some of the pieces sounded very similar and it was quite difficult to tell which piece was being played.
Overall however the concert was a very enjoyable experience and I would love to see another one like it.

review for Wicked
Wicked the Musical is a musical showing at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London’s West End.
It’s about two witches who fall out and everything that they go through.
The songs were fantastic and kept everybody really feeling what the main characters in the play were going through. The actors and singers must have been practicing for many years to be this good at what they do. They were really professional and convincing in their characters
The set design was beautiful and the costumes were really good making you feel that each of the characters were even larger than life and it had a very powerful effect on you.
The use of light was really powerful and made the play come alive.
My favourite song was “defying Gravity” sang by the Wicked Witch and this ended the first half before the interval.
It definitely worth going to see and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to see it. I felt that it was a great experience for a teenager or an adult but maybe not for primary age children. I would definately go again if I was given the chance.
Review of Wicked the Musical by Venesa
Venesa - Review of Wicked the Musical
I had seen the film “The Wizrd of Oz” so I was very excited to be going to see this spin-off at the West End. We were studying Musical Theatre for our GCSEs and so it was a great chance to see one.
We travelled by train to from Maida Vale to the West End and had to cue in the freezing cold before we were allowed in. The theatre itself was impressive and you could feel the excitement in the air as we took our seats.
The story is about what happened before Dorothy landed in Oz and follows the story of two witches as they grow up and fall out with each other.
The music was breathtaking and the singing was great. There is a real variety of moods for the songs in this show however and these are used very effectively to highlight thoughts and feelings of the characters throughout the show. ‘One Short Day in the Emerald City' is a joyful song. But one of the most emotional songs in the show for me, is the song between Elphaba and Prince Fiyero; there is a moment in the performance when Fiyero and Elphaba finally get together and sing ‘As Long as You're Mine'. This song is full of emotion and feeling and when you watch it performed on stage, you can see the chemistry between these two characters so clearly.
The actors were first class throughout, never forgetting their lines or coming out of character.
I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, as did everyone else who came on the trip to see the show. It opened my eyes to how much work and practice goes in to a big show like this and how good a performance can be.
Wicked review by Luis
Luis Review
Wicked
We went to see Wicked the Musical at the West End in January earlier this year. I had heard good things about it and was looking forward to watching it and seiding for myself. I hadn’t seen the original film but I was told that it didn’t matter.
The music was fantastic and really increased the emotion of the story. I couldnt fault it in any way. We were all looking at each other and sayhing “wow” as we watched and listend. The costumes were really impressive too./ We didn’t want the show to stop.
The singing was amazing and the songs were so well written that I couldn’t stop singing them all the way home. I do musical theatre and I know it is not easy to do two things at the same time.
Over all I was so very impressed with how good the acting and singing were. Nearly eveyone who watched it agreed with us too. The audience was very impressed.
two door cinema club Review by Lucas
Could you give us a general overview?
I went to see ‘two door cinema club’ who were one of my favourite bands at the time, they’re a band of three people, two guitars and a bass. I went to see them at alexander palace which was in north London, it a really big venue, it had at least couple hundred of people standing so it was a standing concert.
Give a description of what art form you saw
It was music, it was a band, I was familiar with their music before I went to see the concert, behind them they had images going up behind them and different colours, strobe lights, lights and everything that caught the eye.
Have you seen anything similar?
Yes, recently, I went to Greenwich live on Greenwich hill and it was a festival featuring aloe black and lots of other artists. I liked it because it was dark and in alexander palace it was in the concert hall which was dark and at Greenwich live it was at night so there were lights and strobe lights going on all around.
Was there anything unexpected?
Yes, they had something really quite fun actually, they dropped balloons from nets above us from the top of the venue and so everyone was hitting them around while they were playing and I thought that was really fun. We tried to catch them but failed.
What did you learn?
I learnt that there were more songs that I liked that they played and I also learnt that not all the action happens on stage but in the lighting and in the atmosphere around you.
What went well and why?
Everything went well, the lighting was great, the sound was great, very loud to say the least, the performers were very good they were all very charismatic on stage and I loved it.
What didn’t work well and why?
There were so many people that when we approached the front, there were lots of mosh pits and so we were pushed back and it didn’t work for me.
How was it received by the audience?
Very well, everybody there knew the band so they knew all the songs and everything like that, therefore, the atmosphere was very good. Everyone was singing and they knew the songs.
What are you taking away from this?
It’s not all in the act that everything happens, it’s in the lighting and the atmosphere that everything is happening so I think the balloons were very good at entertaining the audience.
Review of Philharmonic orchestra: west side story ‘somethings coming’ by Shaima
Review of Philharmonic orchestra: west side story ‘somethings coming’
Watching this rehearsal for the first time really encouraged me to take music really seriously because they were just so inspiring in addition they were in time with everyone and they played so beautifully which stimulated me to improve my own music as I would like to be as professional as them moreover play as beautifully as they did .I really enjoyed it since I have never been to a rehearsal before as well as since it was really interesting to learn about a different style of music and to get a different type of perspective of music which could also influence my music pieces as I could use some of their musical features . Every single musician stood out to me they were all in sync with each other. The pieces that were played sounded so beautiful and powerful and gave the audience an impression on what type of music it was for example if it was a content song or if it was a tragic song this helped me to understand the story and the theme of the piece that was played. The orchestra did not slip up once which made their rehearsal very professional. Generally I really enjoyed the rehearsal and would certainly like to see another one again since it gave me a lot of inspiration for my own music to become better and motivated me as well to put more time into my music.
