Rarely a day goes by where I am not asked "exactly how did Starhawk meet Droid?". Well wonder no more. The characters originally appeared in The Crunch comic in 1979 and went on to appear in a number of other DC Thomson titles including Buddy.

In 1982 Buddy ran the Young Starhawk story. Starhawk is revealed to have been the lone survivor of an attack by the dastardly aliens, the Krell, who became his long running nemesis and is now being taught in various aspects of survival by a man named Kard. Eventually Kard has to sacrifice himself in order to save Starhawk but before doing so he tells his protégé to seek out an android in nearby desert ruins.

Starhawk finds the android, Droid, buried in the sand but is then attacked by the giant bat creature while he is working to revive him. Luckily enough his exposure to the sun is enough to recharge Droid's solar power cells and he saves Starbuck's life. Phew! Droid then recounts that he had belonged to Kard but he had been lost during a battle over the ruins.

The Space Rider, appears in Buddy No. 92, dated 6 November 1982. It also belonged to Kard and Starhawk and Droid find it submerged in a lake.
