This time of year, I don't own a flower farm. I own a mud farm. I slosh around and track mud everywhere. The porch, my kitchen and definitely my car. It is gray, dirty and depressing. When I first moved on the farm, lilies were some of the first flowers I planted. I still plant them directly in the ground. They have gone in and out of style over the last 20 years. I know I could have lilies most of the season if I grew programmed bulbs in crates. Programmed bulbs are kept chilled and ordered before being planted. But ... I want to embrace the joys of a particular flower at a particular moment in the season. Lilacs in May .... dahlias in August. And our lilies show up in June.
