@yourallaroundnerd I honestly have enough thoughts on the new character designs to fill a novella. I’ll do a ludicrously large series of posts gushing about how much I love every single redesign thus far once I meet all of the mains and make more as we meet the extended cast but for now let’s start with I love the character design updates a lot!
The 1980s series pushed a lot of boundaries when it came to the diverse presentation of women but there were still a lot more that it left untouched.
So, thank Stevenson that cast no longer all look as terribly pale as I am! I sincerely hope the trend continues with the rest of the coming cast. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the 1980s She-Ra but that doesn’t make me blind to it’s faults. I’m fairly sure Netossa was the only PoC in that entire show and she only appeared in about three episodes!
There was also a depressing lack of diverse body types. I’m sure some (though not all) of the body shape diversity issue could be attributed to the fact the show was mainly made to sell Action Figures which sometimes differed only in the provided accessories, and their budget was such that they re-used animation & effects like it was going out of fashion, but they still could have done a lot better.
I’m sure there are already people out there saying this more eloquently than my clumsy self but it does my soul good to know that so many different people are going to be able to see themselves in the characters of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power!
