Trump 'Terminates' Secretary Of Defense Mark Esper

Secretary Esper has kept a letter of resignation on hand since the summer, when he and the president disagreed over the use of active duty troops to put down street protests.

When General James Mattis announced his resignation as Trump’s Secretary of Defense in January of 2019, Trump immediately fired him and appointed Mark Esper as his replacement. “Esper had the least amount of higher-level government and military experience of any defense secretary in memory.” His primary qualification appears to have been going along with whatever Trump wanted, earning him the nickname “Yesper.”

Back in June, as you’ll recall, protests broke out over the police murder of George Floyd and racial injustice in general. Trump ordered active duty military troops to charge into Minneapolis and quash the protests, claiming he was invoking his authority under the Insurrection Act of 1807. Esper, however, ensured that the troops did not interfere directly but “stayed outside the city” instead. As Esper explained:

“The option to use active duty forces in a law enforcement role should only be used as a matter of last resort, and only in the most urgent and dire of situations.”

Trump was furious that his “Yesper” had dared to interfere with his authoritarian impulses, and wanted to fire him immediately. Some of his advisers, however, suggested that it might look bad for Trump to fire his third defense secretary “so close to the election.”

Well, the election’s over.
