On September 9th at Metro (Chicago) I had the pleasure of experiencing Russian Circles. They are touring after the release of their 6th studio album 'Guidance'. They were preceded by Sweet Cobra and Cloakroom. I enjoyed both openers but if I'm being honest, I was there for one reason and that reason took the stage last. Save the best for last, 100% spot on.
I was blown away by how absolutely amazing Russian Circles actually sounded. I feel that a lot of bands, when you see them live, can end up sounding sloppy or muddy, and have to perfect their sound in studio. With Russian Circles, this was not the case, at all. They sounded phenomenal. I posted a few short videos and pics on my IG and did go live on periscope for a few minutes, but didn’t want to ruin my experience by fucking with my phone for too long. I was completely in awe by the talent on that tiny stage. These guys are the real deal musicians. Their set was perfection.

I have to admit seeing them in Chicago, which happens to be their home town, as well as mine, was pretty fucking cool. I would absolutely love to see them again, so much so, I would be willing to travel. I highly recommend checking these guys out, and picking up their new Album "Guidance", and while youre at it, pick up the rest of their catalogue as well. They will not disappoint!

Seeing this is making me want to read this book again! It was really good the first time, second time is almost always better!
DJ Shadow ‘The Mountain Will Fall’
20 years since the first full length release by DJ Shadow ‘Entroducing…..’ , he graces us with his newest full length release ‘The Mountain Will Fall’. Shadow is known for his proficiency in sampling, a master at his craft,and this record is not lacking his sampling magic. In addition, he took things a step further, did some experimenting and created some original configurations. While the sound of this record is coeval, some vintage Shadow shines through reminding you, as if there was ever a doubt, that you are in fact experiencing somewhat of an evolution of the master himself. Without gushing too much, I fucking love this record! It's been giving me eargasams since my first listen. Don’t take my word for it, take a listen and decide for yourself.
Lets talk about live music, shall we?
Being the music lover I am, it's not a far stretch to assume that I am also a lover of live music. I feel like it can be a cathartic experience if you allow yourself to be immersed into the moment. You can literally feel the sound washing over your skin. Seeping into your pores. Blowing your hair back. Giving you goose bumps. I have no musical talent what so ever. Unless you count poorly playing the flute in the school band for a few years, which I do not. Experiencing people who can take an instrument, microphone or even a turntable and change the way I am feeling, is completely remarkable. There becomes a weird bond with audience and musician, even though you may have never, nor will ever meet the artist, you have experienced part of their soul. I don’t feel any musician would be complete with out their music and an audience to share it with. An equation that, without you is obviously incomplete. You become part of what makes them truly who they are. 2016 has been, and is continuing to be, a great live music year for me. The adventure started in February with Metric at the House of Blues Chicago. I'd seen Metric previously and knew I was in for a treat. They played the favorites from their older records along with some tracks from their newest record 'Pagans in Vegas'. Both times I have seen them they have been high energy, with some unique visual effects and never disappoint when they bring out the acoustic guitar accompanied by the beautiful voice of Emily Haines. It was an all around fun show. Next up was In May. Chelsea Wolfe at Thalia Hall in Chicago. My first time at this venue and it was gorgeous. I'd never seen Chelsea Wolfe so it was the ultimate venue/band virgin experience. Chelsea Wolfe was, as I imagined, a presence. The music was as haunting and beautiful live as it is via headphones, which is not always accomplished. Aside from being impressed with the musical and visual prowess of the band, the diversity of the crowd caught my attention. Everything from men is suits to middle age soccer moms. I can only imagine that they all had as excellent of an experience, as I did. In June, it was Summer Cannibals at Subterranean in Chicago. I was binge listening to this band for a sold two weeks before this show and was very excited and hopeful that their sound would translate live. Did it ever! Jessica Bourdeaux can absolutely shred. There is no talent lacking with anyone in this band. I could hardly believe I was able to experience them in such a tiny venue with only 30 people, at best. I suggest keeping an eye on this band because I would be very surprised if they don't blow up, any second now. That brings us up to date. Future shows I am planning to attend this year are as follows: September 9 'Russian Circles' at Metro Chicago September 10 'Explosions in the Sky' at Aragon Ballroom Chicago October 7 'DJ Shadow' at Metro Chicago October 21 'Failure' at Double Door Chicago I would also like to add my disappointment that I am unable to see 'Band of Skulls' when they are in Chicago. They happen to be playing the same night as Explosions in the Sky at a different club(Metro). I guess that means there has to be a music centered road trip in my near future!
I can't be the only person who misses Denali. Both albums are still heavy in my ever changing rotation.They can end up on repeat for hours, or sometimes even days. Maura Davis' voice is completely euphoric to me.
