The effect of camera angles
There used to be a blogger named JRCAch who mainly shared his opinions on net idols and Japanese pop idols. Some of his posts were very controversial.
He once correctly observed that certain popular dancers on Youtube placed their camera on the floor, and suggested that footage shot from this angle looked better than raising the camera up on a tripod.
Unfortunately, in one of his most infamous theories he concluded that the lower angle caused the video to be centered on what he euphemistically called the “mother area”, and attributed their popularity to male viewers gawking at the dancer’s crotch.
His conclusion was as offensive as it was incorrect. But what’s remarkable is that his initial observation about camera angle improving video was actually right - just not for the reasons he thought!
As anyone who takes a lot of selfies will know, a photo taken from high angle appears cuter. Anything closer to the camera appears larger, and a high angle makes the head and eyes seem bigger while making the chin relatively smaller. And as any anime fan knows, bigger head and eyes means more cute.
Placing a camera on the floor has a different effect. The legs appear longer, and the head appears smaller. This gives a more grown-up sense of beauty.
