The more I think about Origin the more I realize it truly was written by English majors. Like, a calcified hippocampus won't do anything to your long-term memory.

V's tropes + my responses
passing out — I totally agree, I love it when a character is pushing through an injury to get something important done and then collapses right after. Something similar happened in Detective Chinatown 2 (not quite passing out) where Liu Haoran's character comes face to face with the killer. He's standing his ground and the killer takes out a scalpel and there's this tense moment, then the killer runs off and Liu Haoran just kind of buckles. In this case it was from fear, but actually collapsing from exhaustion or blood loss is also very delicious.
taking a bullet/sword/whatever for someone else — Who doesn't love a double whammy of physical pain + emotional wreckage? Bonus points if their relationship hadn't been categorically close before this. There are quite a few flavours to this, ie stoic character gets hurt and inadvertently reveals how much they care, character acts on instinct without realizing, the saved on tentatively taking their hand while they're unconscious and feeling self-conscious because they're not sure if they're overstepping their bounds, etc.
caretaker as a whumper — Again, double whammy of physical + emotional angst. While this could be kind of gross a la pop culture Stockholm syndrome, it could also have some really great character nuance. For example, whumper hurt their loved one as a deception plot and feels guilty, whumper is trying to scare them off but can't help feeling worried, all sorts of fun stuff.
My tropes + my reasoning
I'm sure everyone has a lot of good whump tropes so I'm gonna do something different and pick three moments from Origin that embody whump tropes done well. I don't actually know if some of these count as whump?
discovering betrayal after the betrayer has a change of heart — This is when, quite late into the story, a character discovers that their loved one has actually had ulterior motives this whole time, ie plotting to assassinate them. But by then the other character has already developed attachments and there's a great moment the depth of both characters' love for each other is just presented rawly, both by how hurt (or even angry) the betrayed is and how the betrayer wants to take them back. This was done so well in the last episode of Origin (no spoilers!) and honestly? The acting was just phenomenal
saving and losing someone at the same time — This is especially good when the action that saves and loses them is the exact same. For example, if a character has to send their loved one away to keep them safe. This is also done in the last episode of Origin and it's only one of two times we see Shun Kenzaki cry. It's also done a lot in period dramas, ie Wei Wuxian giving Jiang Cheng his gold core in The Untamed or Zuo Qingci turning Su Yunluo away in Love in Between.
intentionally hurting yourself to save someone — In one of the earlier episodes of Origin, Shun and Lana get trapped in a refrigerated room together. Pretty standard trope, right? Good chance for the snuggles. Except no, Shun reaches into the air vent with his bare hand while it's blasting cold air to break the fan and stop the temperature from dropping. Afterward he kinda collapses and his hand is all frozen and bleeding and it was so good. There's also another moment when he's exposed to the space vacuum to save Lana (the science here is really ermmmmm but whatever) and he's bleeding from his eyes and has got frost on his face and is about to pass out but Lana is safe so he just smiles at her.

I don’t want to be alone
so now that youtube cancelled it, I mean Origin(I knew I hated you youtube) do we know whether the creator is planning to sell the show to another network ?
I’ve checked around but it seems that so far no network has offered to take the series. That’s a real shame because the series had great potential. :/ The writer had already planned 4 seasons and I’d have loved to see what happens to our fave characters (and ships).
Maybe if we’re really lucky, a network picks it up (coughNetflixcough) and we get our 4 seasons. :D
Adelayo Adedayo as Agnes “Lee” Lebachi
The British actress recurred as a hacker in the first season of the YouTube Premium series Origin. Her character had a dalliance with a female AI.
