After an hour’s walk around Yr Eifl mountain on the Llyn Peninsula of North Wales, I spent some time at Tre’r Ceiri Iron Age Hill Fort. This is one of the best preserved and impressive iron age forts, enclosing over 150 buildings and an early Bronze Age cairn. House styles change over time within the enclosure with early roundhouses and much later rectangular structures. The Iron Age fort provided a residence for approximately 100 people but it may have grown to include over 400 inhabitants in the later Romano-Celtic period. Finds include pottery, iron tools, jewellery, stone spindle whorls and glass beads.
The fort was entered by two main entrances, each with obvious trackways. The outer wall of the enclosure is particularly distinctive and impressive. Despite the great heights and poor take-off and landing spaces, I managed to grab some lovely drone footage. 28.5.16.
