Some girls dance, some girls derby 💣 #RollerDerby #rollerderbygirls #practice #YucaipaRollerDerby #YucTownRollinBombshells
A little history on the sport called Roller Derby. Starting long before 1885, Madison Square Garden would host 6 day skating marathons. Leo Seltzer, a then former film distributor, in 1935 started thinking of ways to help society because everyone was experiencing “The Great Depression.” He knew promoters would push for dance marathons and skating marathons pushing all participants who were male only, to the limits. So he decided to combine both and started promoting “derbies” — marathon races, just like the horse racing which goes counter-clockwise. He realized he still didn’t get the outcome he wanted so he decided to change things up with a WOW factor. He decided to add women to the sport and debuted his first version of roller derby on August 13, 1935. Remember, 1935, yes women belonged In the kitchen and were not allowed to wear pants to church. The theatrics started when there were no rules and a mother/son team joined. The mother would carry a large hatpin and stick her competitors to get them out of her way. Josephine “Ma” Bogash and Billy were known as the first “personality players.” To add to the excitement in the middle of these long laps, they would take breaks, allowing skaters a resting period, and add in jams which were quick bursts of skating in which winners would earn cash on the spot. These races were a highlight themselves.
As time went on, the flat track turned bank as to not end up in the laps of the audience. Yes, the audience…well mannered, respectful people until…skaters hit the floor and they went wild. Then they turned on the skaters and yelled with excitement from the stands. Damon Runyon had dinner with Seltzer and scribbled a plan of Co-Ed interaction which included very strategic pin-ball action between opponents, now having placed them on teams…yes roller derby as we know it today.
Do something...get out there and do something... Have you ever said, "I want to be happier," then do what you love... Have you ever thought, "I want to, but I am scared of failing," how excited will you feel once you succeed... Have you ever cringed, "I don't like the way I look," you will definitely look better than the person still cringing... Have you ever felt, "I don't have time," make a goal simply to make time and then add goals later into that time... Do you feel like no one will ever support you, "I am all alone and no one else knows what I am going through," don't be afraid to share a piece of yourself with someone because it's human instinct to want to make others happy and true friends never disappoint... ESPECIALLY Derby Sisters!!
