Amputated body parts can often be surgically reattached. Once the person is stable, locate the severed part. Wrap it in a sterile or clean cloth. Place the part in a tightly sealed plastic bag or waterproof container. Place the bag or container on ice. Do not soak the severed part in water, and do not put it directly on ice. Give it to EMS providers for transport with the person to the hospital.
