Hong Kong 721 Yuen Long Attack (terrorism)

What happened last year today in Hong Kong (21•07•2019) has left a permanent scar on our hearts. It’s the day when the reputation of the HK police is gone, entirely. The white shirt triad beat the citizens in the Yuen Long Station with weapons, indiscriminately, including the pregnant woman.

What’s crazier is, the emergency hotline (999) refused to pick up for any calls for help for 2 hours. It spent 39 mins for the police to arrive to the station when it is just a few minutes drive from the police station to the metro station.

What’s more ridiculous is, two policemen turned their back from the helpless citizens and pretended that they saw nothing. The police claimed that they did not see any white shirt triads holdin any kind of weapons. What’s more insane is, they did not tried to stop anyone of the white shirt to attack the citizens, instead they put their hands in their shoulders and acted like ‘allies’. They still claimed that the citizens started the whole thing first and those in the white were just trying to protect their home when it’s fake. They still refuse to beat any responsibility and not willing to explain why it takes so long for them to arrive and why no one pick up the phone. They even shut down the police report station on that day so there’s nowhere the citizens can call for help.

Is this Hong Kong Police? Working with triads and beating teenagers and youngsters who is fighting for freedom and democracy? So what’s the difference between Hong Kong Police and triads when they are basically doing the same thing? It’s police brutality, it’s terrorism. The police force should be disbanded.

Since the establishment and the implementation of the national security law, words like ‘liberate HK, revxlution of our time’ cannot be said or it’ll be regarded as secession. But as a Hong Konger, we will never give up.

In The Middle Of Nowhere On The New Territories Plain, The Days Of Idyllic Solitude Of Yuen Long In The 60s

We go back to the 60s. Yuen Long, far away from the city of Hong Kong by a 2-hour bus trip, was a quiet, beautiful and enchanting village town having a history of 600 years. At night, the shadows of the big trees fell across the only one main road and hid the infrequent cars and frequent bicycles. Soon, this huge plain of the New Territories, the out-of-mind countryside of Hong Kong, bathed in the moonlight and its centre Yuen Long glittered like a precious diamond dapped with blue rays which were in fact the TV screens looking out from the household windows.

My mother used to be a ‘town girl’ of Yuen Long. My grandmother, a widow, was a caring and generous soul healer for her neighbours. She ran a rice shop in Yuen Long. After marriage, mother moved to the city but Yuen Long was a shelter for her against any rainy day, for blessings and guidance from her great mother. This peaceful town had become my second home since my toddler days.

Yuen Long was a terminal market for agricultural commodities since it was a transportation hub for villagers of the New Territories. Cocks woke up early, flew and crowed in the morning for food. Birds sang in the afternoon. After supper, you heard dogs barking either at the strangers or every child who speeded down the narrow lanes on their bicycles. Before we went to bed, cats started to cry at night out of boredom, anxiety or want for love. In the small town of Yuen Long, animals did make an orchestra and their notes made a symphony. We enjoyed the music.

In those days, gossip was called ‘news’ in Yuen Long. Housewives found rumours useful and passed such onto one another as a social gift. Joy was to be valued more than the truth. Women were mostly uneducated and could not read. So, people loved gossip and it was the biggest way that kept them up-to-date.

The buildings at that time did not have toilets. Night soil was collected from buckets, and farmers welcomed housewives to carry such fertilizer and dump it into the narrow channel dug at the side of their fields. People walked a mile in pajamas for this wonderful dumping exercise. Farmers sometimes sold vegetables at a discount as a small gesture of gratitude to the donors of the unnecessary from their bodies.

That people became naked or exposed in Yuen Long in the 60s does not mean they wanted to be sexy. These men were just the way they were, denoting the character of the early stage in the evolution from the rural community to an urban city. Breast feeding by mothers was common, seen everywhere in Yuen Long, but perhaps keeping the baby healthy might be a relatively unimportant concern. Milk powder costed a lot in those days. The male farmers and labourers in Yuen Long usually worked without a shirt, not because YOLO made them desire to show off their chest but this would make them more comfortable with the sun. Parents let their kids play outdoors without clothes. Children saw their own bodies as something natural—as opposed to being ashamed of for the kids in the city. ‘Fat’ was not a mean word in those days and in fact, it was a word of admiration and compliment.

Things end but memories last forever. Our memories bring back stories, people, food, smiles and tears. Yuen Long grew and it did not remain the same as I left it. My senior family members and relatives there are gone. But, this old town still has 2 parts—its loss of the past and the re-making of it into a new place that now starts to reproduce memories for the younger ones again.

Hong Kong reels from armed mob violence

Dozens injured after masked men storm a train station to attack pro-democracy protesters.

Hong Kong police are facing accusations of failing to protect pro-democracy activists who were attacked by unidentified assailants on Sunday.

The men - dressed in white shirts and suspected to be triad gangsters - assaulted pro-democracy protesters and passers-by in the Yuen Long area.

This is the first time this kind of violence has been seen in the ongoing anti-extradition demonstrations.

Several lawmakers questioned why police were slow to arrive at the scene.

Footage posted on social media showed dozens of men attacking people with wooden rods and metal sticks inside the station.

Forty-five people were injured, with one person in critical condition.

Pro-democracy protesters were set upon as they travelled back from a rally in the centre of Hong Kong, where riot police had fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters.

Video footage also surfaced of pro-Beijing lawmaker Junius Ho, shaking hands with men in white and giving them the thumbs-up signal.

On Facebook, he denied a connection with the men and said he was just responding to their greetings when they recognised him on the street after he left a restaurant.

7.21 White (Dark night of Yuen Long)

I did not join the march on July 21, since my foot was still hurting. At night, the protesters arrived the Liaison Office, stained the Chinese national emblem with black ink. The police employed heavy force against the protesters.

Midnight, an unbelievable terrorist attack happened in Yuen Long. A gang of around 100 white-clad men forced themselves into Yuen Long railway station, armed with wooden clubs and other weapons, some of them later found to have a background in triads. They attacked the passengers in the station, especially people dressed in black (like the protesters), but also other unrelated citizens, and reporters.

At least 45 was injured and hospitalized from the attack, 24000 emergency calls from desperate citizens were made. Yet, the police arrived at Yuen Long only after the attackers were gone, they did not stop them from hurting innocent citizens. The police claimed that they did not have enough force to counter the attack, well sure, they were all shooting protesters in Sheung Wan.

It’s too late for them to do anything now, even if they try to. The victims and witnesses of the night are traumatized. People’s trust of the police force is forever broken, shattered. The sense of hatred and vengeance within the society were elevated to a new height, and brought the protests to another chapter.
