Great HBO Masterclass with Yuen Woo-ping @newyorkasianfilmfestival @filmlinc. Inspiring to be in the same room as #yuenwooping #wuxia master and the best martial arts director around. I was reminded of my love of martial arts movies and how exciting it was to see Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh in action the first time and to know that Yuen Woo-ping worked with all of them and more on seminal movies. Then I went to see The Miracle Fighters from 1982. Great fight choreography. And I liked all the weirdness. It isn’t masterpiece level like many of his works but it still entertains. Master Yuen is always thinking and he said he likes to use people’s strengths to build interesting moments and fights. His remarks on The Grandmaster were funny and respectful. To paraphrase he said it took time to train the neophytes but then his scenes were filmed but Wong Kar-wai has a specific vision and that vision took time to execute. Due to time I think the Hollywood movies were not spoken of but as a Keanu fan, I would’ve enjoyed an anecdote or two. When asked he said Jin Zhang was the easiest to work with in the way he moves. I look forward to seeing Master Z: Ip Man Legacy. https://www.instagram.com/p/BzcRqEohw7m/?igshid=mn00bg17ouc0
