The winter solstice, or Yule, takes place on December 21st this year.
Yule is an old pagan holiday celebrated in different ways throughout history. In pre-Christian Scandinavia, the Yule feast lasted 12 days.The Germanic people believed the gods would lead a ghostly procession through the sky. In ancient Egypt, the winter solstice was thought to be the rebirth of Ra.
Many old Yule practices have become Christmas traditions:
Such as, the act of bringing in a holiday tree to preserve the spirit
the Druid colors of red and green
Winter feasts
The home is decorated with sacred plants, such as holly and ivy
Large Yule logs burned in the fireplace
We still used the term “Yuletide”
