in the coach jannik au maybe after carlos drops the "he's like a father to me" in an interview and jannik gets soo hot and bothered by it and realises he can't do this anymore, he's too close to slipping up and bringing down the whole charade of pretending that his feelings for carlos are wholly platonic and appropriate, so he quits. he'd rather leave than risk hurting carlos

only of course he can't TELL carlos WHY he quits, so carlos is just like "you're leaving me ? 🥺" while thinking that he fucked up in the interview, that that was too much, if only he'd been more normal about jannik/kept his feelings better hidden then jannik wouldn't be leaving, but of course jannik doesn't consider them that close etc etc

this is fr one of my fav age gap scenarios to dream about. an unnecessary break up brought on by the older with the purpose of “not hurting/ruining the life” of the younger but it just devastates both of them …… like it’s sooooo …. awesome to me

so compelling for this “breakup” to be a breakup of their partnership, before they get feelings involved. jannik debating it in his head for weeks and months before carlos says That, which is just the nail in the coffin, he has to stop, he has to leave this poor kid in better hands. so he sits carlos down and tells him his decision and carlos feels like the world has just ended. like so insanely devastated and nauseous at the idea of not having jannik anymore and also like you said Worried it’s his fault for being too obvious so he tries not to show how upset he is. but he’s so bad at it. literally immediately gets tears in his eyes that he has to swipe away with his sleeve but at the same time saying “it’s okay i understand thank you for everything” and jannik is watching carlos react exactly how he knew he would, clutching his hand to stop himself from reaching out to soothe carlos & telling himself he doesn’t know it yet but this is good for him
