"NEVER BACK DOWN COWARD. NEVER BACK DOWN COWARD. NEVER BACK DOWN COWARD."
-Zabelle, fallen angel
Zabelle by Nancy Kricorian is so weak a book.
The writing is very very basic and easy to read but I wanted something meaty - the life of an Armenian woman who survived the genocide and immigrated to America and made a life.
But it's so centered on her and her life the story is diminished - it says it's about her kids learning about her, but outside the first chapter it's all from her perspective. And her life becomes a series of vignettes and it's just disappointing.
It definitely felt like a YA book, one parents would approve of, because yes there are mentions of violence, well actually not many. her father is shot and her mother-in-law slaps her. It's very ahistorical feeling even as it's about an historic event because we never see the bigger picture.
I guess I expected writing like in Birds Without Wings or the background in Middlesex.
do not recommend
it doesn't even educate you about the genocide
