This is sooooooo old, I'm so sorry Anon! But I have a RANT for y'all in this Chili's tonight. There's a novel that's as thick as a brick, a debut from an author who sure knows how to make a lot of words amount to... well, nothing. That's right, this novel that is over 800 pages (PAGES) equates to nadda. No theme. No message. No growth. It is a textbook on how to spend 50 years remaining static. The reader puts down this book and is left with no changes within them, no new thoughts or questions or insights about the world. There's literally NO substance to this novel! But.... it's trended and seen the spotlight and created a buzz out of nothing, and why? Because it was sad.

A massive pet peave of mine: The belief that something sad must be good or of quality. It's a masterpiece! Some say, because it manages to make you feel like shit. Sure, (as anyone who has read my works knows) I'm all for sad endings... when they MEAN something. To send home the message, or display the consequences of the characters great folly, the tragic but inescapable downfall of our hero.... none of this is in this ~215k hunk of words. Why is it sad? Just to be sad. That's right, this book practically gets off on being sad. Why? Trick question, there's no reason why. And sorry but MAN that pisses me right off! At least make the pain and struggle and hurt all amount to something. As a writer, I shiver with fear that the only thing a reader is left with after they finish my work is... an overwhelming vibe of shittiness. And nothing else. No thoughts, head empty, guess I'll fuck off and watch paint dry now because I'll get the same amount of stimulation from it.

Overwriter : What is the easiest thing for you to write/ what are your strengths?

This is a hard question lol I think the easiest thing for me to write is fluffy, silly stuff. Just place my characters into really ridiculous situations and have them be really disastrous people and for whatever reason I’m able to write the shit outta that real fast haha so maybe crack fic? Haha but when it comes to specific writing abilities eesh. Uhm… maybe like… setting? I usually have a very solid idea of the vibe for my fics. I don’t feel like I write physical setting very well, I can’t really visualize things I haven’t seen before, but like WHEN something is set? That I feel like I have a good handle on and at least I think I do a good job writing that. So I guess that? I feel VERY UNSURE answering this question and feel like readers would be better suited to answer it than me haha!

Underwriter : What is one area you feel you should focus more on with your writing?

Its suuuuper hard for me to physically describe things but I try! I’m constantly working on that. Remembering to show things as well as telling them. Uhm I feel like I also have to remind myself to add in the sexual tension and intimacy. Sometimes I don’t, but oftentimes I do. As an ace person I guess I just don’t naturally think about it haha but I do like TRY and am constantly working on writing those intimate moments better. So that I think would be what I want to continue focusing on.

On the Edge - Snippet

I wrote this fun little dialogue bit that no longer works for my BLFF story, but it’s a good tongue in cheek piece for anyone who’s experienced the confusion of trying to remember teammates given names when you all go by surnames and numbers. 

Hockey Player!Harry - Figure Skater!Louis - 2010 Winter Olympics - 200 words

Liam purses his lips in thought. 

“Did you ask Ryan?” He asks hopefully, like that’s any help at all. Harry snorts. “Which one, Miller? Malone? Kessel?” “No, no, Kessel’s not a Ryan, it’s Kessler.” Mitch interjects. “Or it could be Callahan? Suter? Whitney?” Harry arches his brows at Liam, still awaiting clarification. “Fuck off, I meant Bobby Ryan.” Liam snaps. “Oh, yeah. No luck, and Quick too.”  Harry’s good mood slumps a bit as the game ends. Someone needs to have a chat with the mothers of America on the name Ryan and how they raised their sons to be so good at hockey.    Liam frowns. “Was he in a rush?” “No, Johnny Quick.” Harry clarifies in a huff. 

He shoves his hair back for the fifth time this conversation, his patience for this died days ago. Louis rocks uncertainly on his heels as he watches the three hockey players before chiming in. 

“What language are you speaking?”

Tell us about your current projects  – what are they about, how’s progress, what do you love most about them?

Ooooh! Technically I have 9, but 2 are finished and just not posted because they are part of a fic fest! 

BLFF Spoonful of Sugar - Sequel to my lil Sugar Cube teaser that I know a lot of people have been patiently awaiting! Similar plot line to my fic V, but it turned out insanely different in tone than I first imagined. Much lighter/family oriented?Excited to see peoples reaction to it because I think it’s very different from what they’re expecting. On the Edge - 2010 Olympics AU! Just finishing up the details. Really struggled a bit on this one, got a bit too caught up in my own melancholy for skating (haven’t been on ice in over a year due to an injury+C19 rink closures) the style was different than anything I’ve done before (dual POV) so I did enjoy playing with that aspect of it.

OHFF Definition of Beauty - My first high school AU! Also my first ABO fic! I only have it plotted so far, but I am eager to sit down and tend to it properly. Very cute/light/fluffy.  SHINE - Alpha Bodyguard!Liam/ Omega Popstar!Harry. WOW did this one take me by surprise. Supposed to be something fun and sexy, but it’s turning into something really angsty and I am loving it! It’s a fic where the first thing I wrote for it was a scene about 3/4 of the way into the plot and the whole thing is going to orient around this very intense moment.

1D Big Bang The Ground Below is Above My Feet - !!! I don’t want to say too much but I’m 40k deep already. Haven’t worked on it since the early days of summer and probably wont get back to it until the Holidays, but I do just adore writing the versions of Harry and Louis I’ve got in this one. I would say it is the most true to canon characterisations I have.

1D Christmas Fest Untitled - CEO Louis / Intern Harry, snowed in at the office on xmas eve... what will happen I wonder hmmm  👀 I am excited to pop out this little smut fic for the holidays as I always wish I had more fun OS fics and this is the perfect opportunity! 

Original/Other: Called Your Name - This is more of an idea I have floating around and I come back to every now and again. Ot4 that orients around Liam, because I love me a Lima Bean. I daydream about this one the most, but it is the one I have the least plot figured out for.  Ride or Die, Sweetheart - An exes to lovers street racer fic based loosely around some silly action movie I already forge the name of. Basically Larry dropped into a Jason Stathom movie. For funsies. It is fully plotted and I am really looking forward to writing the bitter lover relationship between H/L in this one! The Passion Project - This is a goliath of a fic that I will probably still be writing on my death bed. I have a meaty skeleton for it and a LOT of passion for it, but it’s something I don’t want to take on until I have a few dozen more fics under my belt to bulster my experience and skill.

What character do you have the most fun writing?

My lover boy Niall ♡ I fell in love with him first and I have his speech pattern down the best (I think) so he is much easier to write without second guessing myself about his characterisation. I also feel like he’s portrayed very differently in fic than he really is in person, and I like adding his natural cynicism and flash judgement to contrast the general idea of him, as well as his own perception of himself which I think differs a lot from how he actually is. (Is that too deep a thing to say about someone you don’t even know? Probably.) 

What part of writing is the most fun?

Honestly… no one is going to agree with me, but plotting. Plotting out a fic and writing up scene descriptions are the most enjoyable for me! It’s almost like fleshing it out into an actual story after is an added chore I have to do for people to read it, haha! But I will say that moment you’re writing and something super clever just appears before you? And you’re like ‘damn, this is genius!’ even though you didn’t even think about it, it just naturally happened? That’s a pretty fun moment.
