@zaun1ted
Viktor is trying not to panic.
He’s been away for too long. He’s forgotten himself, forgotten the lessons all trenchers learn when they’re children: where to avoid, what to watch out for, how to keep safe when a wrong turn might lead you somewhere you’re likely to be stabbed and taken to pieces. Or the Undercity has simply changed since he’s been gone - changed by the very man that is now, appallingly, his saviour. Who had taken a knife from his coat and plunged it into the assailant’s throat while they were looming over Viktor on the ground.
Should he feign ignorance? There’s no-one else in the Undercity that can afford to dress the way Silco does. And if he has eyes everywhere, he might know Viktor, know he’s lying—
The corpse on the ground gurgles a little. Nothing more than the last of its air leaving it, but it still makes Viktor grimace in the musty silence. He picks himself up, his leg nearly collapsing under him before he can cram the crutch under his arm. There’s blood on him. On Silco too. Viktor feels ill, not just from the pain ricocheting up his side. His leg feels like it’s rotting from under him.
“Do you know them?” He asks, glancing at the body. He’s trying to avoid having to thank this man for saving his life, but gratitude seeps into the edges of his voice nonetheless.
