Zebra Imaging 3D Hologram Review. What Kind Of Sith Sorcery Is This!

One of the great joys we have here at the Post is reviewing Star Wars products that get sent our way. The Star Wars fandom includes lots of collectors who seek out and search everything and anything about our favorite saga. From figurines to high priced statues, to actual movie memorabilia and cans of Spaghetti O’s, we have seen it all. But once in awhile we get something different, something new that catches our eyes. The last time that happened was the amazing BB-8 from Sphero, which we reviewed here late last year. A product that still delivers in terms of enjoyment months later to my four year old daughter.

  We were lucky enough to be handed another one of those  unique products that may find a real home for some Star Wars collectors. The really outgoing and friendly folks at Zebra Imaging have sent us their newest product offering, a holographic display showcasing two very cool scenes from our favorite saga. When I first took a gander at the product mentioned in the email I thought it would make a really great piece for my home office desk and I was happy to review the product for them.

  First and foremost, the packaging for the display is big. Much bigger than I suspected. As I opened the well packed items, one large box containing the base and one hologram plate and another thinner box with an additional hologram plate. The cool looking boxes really started to get my heart rate up as I was expecting something much smaller about the size of a Kindle tablet. Of course the internet scale of things demands a banana. As you can see by the scale of said banana, the display is quite large.

  The base is well constructed and just the right amount of heft for something of it’s size. Included is a usb power adapter which powers the unit. The included full parallax 3D hologram, is a simple flat covered piece of plastic that has a slight tinge of green and really dead black until a light source is projected on it. Of course without any hesitation I setup the display on my desk, slid the holographic plate at the far end of the display, made sure the unit was plugged in and fired it up. The really cool thing about this first impression is I just happened to be sitting down right in front of the unit which instantly showed the classic trench scene from Star Wars: A New Hope. There was Luke’s X-wing being chased by Vader, in his iconic Tie Interceptor. The really great thing about this hologram, besides the fact that it’s big, detailed and really cool, is the color reproduction. The colors were spot on, which is rare in a hologram and more importantly, this image didn’t require any sort of 3D glasses. It was there in plain site and moving your view angle just kept making it better and better. It looked good, not something overwhelming but really nice.

  One thing I try to do in any review here for the Post is give you wonderful people a real world impression from regular folks who are not as obsessed with everything Star Wars. I want to see how Star Wars merchandise really stands up to Muggles of the world and what they think. So of course there is no one better than my lovely wife who I hastened into the home office for her impression. This time, I decided to shut off the lights for a more dramatic effect. A moment later she walked in and took a long look. Just like me, moving her feet to get a different angle to the effect. Her first spoken words were also the same as mine, “It’s kinda big” and then soon after “ I like it, that’s kinda cool”. She then pointed to the other thin box and asked if there is another image in there as well. So we opened it and set it up on the display. WOW. Now that is something we were not expecting. Included in the second box was another full color parallax image, this time of Kylo Ren in the snowy forest of Star Killer Base. I have to be honest here, where we thought the first image of Luke in the trench was ok, this new image of our Knight Of Ren in this great blue, black and white color pallet with falling snow placed around him, really made us smile. This product officially reached a real coolness factor. This image of Kylo Ren is something you want to show off to friends and family when they come over and sure enough I did just that this past weekend with a cousin visiting from out of town. His family had the same reaction we did, “That’s cool” with more shuffling of the feet and moving the head around for a different perspective. Like a small group of penguins trying to communicate. There is one real problem doing this review and that’s it’s nearly impossible to convey via static image or video how great the hologram is. It just cannot be done.

This productive is unique as it really doesn’t do anything but look pretty and that’s ok if it’s used for that purpose. For example, one of the great things I have seen over the years is how some Star Wars collectors really go out of their way to display their merchandise. Most often than not, that includes dedicated room, display shelves and lighting. Some collections, like the one recently covered by the Star Wars Official site are truly incredible spaces to behold and fitting for a product like this. Due to it’s large size if you needed a display to round out your collections of art and large pieces, this would do incredibly well on a shelf or pedalstill. If you are looking to grab the eye of your guests when they walk into a room, then this is a great fit for this product.  

  As with all things there are some good and some bad. The first negative is it’s size. If you are looking to put this on your desk, be prepared to sacrifice a whole lot of real estate. Moreover the light that shines on the holographic plate to create the hologram does spill out around it to a fair degree. You will have white light surrounding the wall and ceiling behind the unit. Third is the price as this product is a tad steep. The price for the Death Star Battle bundle is $250 (3D hologram display and Death Star Battle hologram, which normally sell for $325). The display can be used to with an assortment of holographic plates and I was happily informed that more Star Wars: The Force Awakens images are coming. Each plate will cost an additional $125 and is only available in the United States and Canada. The unit is also available on Amazon and with Prime Delivery.

  The cost is a bit much, but then again, I have seen lots of Star Wars merchandise that hit this price point without the cool factor that this can bring to a collection room or display. Moreover, I did something with this review that I don’t normally do. I decided to hold off on this review for a couple of weeks to gauge the interest power of this product. Just like with Sphero’s BB-8, I wanted to see how much I liked this product over the course of a couple of weeks. Would it sit there on my credenza with little interest or would I fire it up here and there and enjoy it. Truth be told, I actually did fire it up more often than not and just had it glowing next to my work space as I burned the midnight oil bringing you all the news. The Zebra Imaging holographic display probably isn’t for everybody, but I really stand firm that everyone will think it’s pretty cool.

  One request I would have for Zebra Imaging is making a much smaller version for desks. I am sure the unit could be scaled down, which would limit the light bleed into the room and really be a great thing to gander at during the dull moments of a work day. After spending a few weeks with the Zebra Imaging holographic display I can say honestly that it is worth the expenditure if you want something to really spice up your merchandise display or office. Fascinating, beautiful, and vaguely menacing, and all the more so when viewed from above in full-screen handheld isolation, this 3D hologram of a building and the trees and streets around it was featured at Zebra Imaging's Studio-X presentation last week and doesn't require special glasses. Says Voltage, "The architectural applications are obvious. The artistic possibilities are intriguing. [But] the military is also extremely interested.... DARPA has already poured $25 million into Zebra's research."
