This is a piece I want to complete, with the two older versions of Sky and Zelda, those who follow me on Patreon probably already know this version of Sky
I thought of a little moment of relaxation for them, I love how after so many years their love is still so strong💕
Seven down, one to go! I’ll try to get the last one out tomorrow!
I had a bit of trouble with coming up with a plot for this one, but with some help I think it turned out really well (thank you, oh helpful one <3)
Anyway, without further ado~
WARRIORS
It’d been a day since the reveal, but Link still felt shaken and numb, as if struggling under the effects of a sudden, grievous wound.
Perhaps he was, for what wounds hurt more than those of the heart?
“I’m sorry.” Zelda’s voice was quiet and nervous, lacking the calm assurance he’d gotten so used to hearing from her disguise. “I can’t imagine how betrayed you must feel—”
The pain and blame in her voice shook him out of his numb daze, and he shook his head firmly. He might be hurting, but he wouldn’t wish that pain on her, not for anything. “I don’t blame you, your highness,” He said firmly. Her mouth twitched down into a sad frown at the words your highness, but he didn’t notice.
“You did what you had to to stay alive, and I am glad you are safe, my lady.”
It wasn’t the deceit that hurt him. In fact, he was grateful for it, for it had allowed him to meet her. But now she was safe… and in a cruel irony of fate, in being safe, she was lost to him.
He could feel them slipping through his fingers even now, like sand of fools’ gold; dreams he’d just begun to form. Dreams of what he would build in the peace after the war, with her by his side. Of finally winning the right to see her face, and a home and a family all their own, where they could be each other’s and no one else’s.
He was still hers, of course, and always would be; but she was not Sheik but Princess Zelda, and she could never be his.
Her voice cut across thoughts, like a breath of fresh spring air that blew away the edge of the numbness. “I’m the same person, you know.”
“I know that, my lady.”
Elegant brows furrowed as she set her jaw. The interplay of emotions across her face was mesmerizing, now that he could see it in full—so much so that he nearly missed what she said. “Then why do you treat me like I’m someone different?”
He squeezed his eyes shut and slid a hand into his hair, tightening his fingers around the strands to match the tightening in his heart. “I can no longer treat you with such disrespect—”
“What disrespect?” She demanded, stepping closer. He wished she wouldn’t, for every inch caused another crack to form in his heart.
His gaze darted away from her, as her eyes, even though they were now a different shade, were somehow as alluring as they had ever been, and he couldn’t allow himself to be lost in them.
“You are my princess, your highness, and I…” his throat closed, and remained stubbornly so, despite repeated swallows.
There was a long silence, and finally, he dragged his gaze to hers, like a compass needle is ever drawn towards it’s north.
There was a depth of emotion in her eyes. Understanding and compassion, and a sprinkle of sorrow—but most of all determination, a certainty that for some reason took his breath away.
“You are my hero.” The Princess said. “And most of all, you are a warrior.” She took a deep breath, the fingers of one hand twitching as if they, too, wished to reach out. “Even as I am.”
It was like the effect of the rising sun on the fog of night—not all at once, but slowly, gradually, a ray of light pierced through his numbness, and Link’s eyes widened.
“Even as you?” He rasped, and Zelda smiled. It was a small thing, a little nervous but oh-so-hopeful, and all of a sudden Link felt as if he could breathe again.
“In this, we are equal, my fellow warrior.” Zelda said, and tossed her head. “And if anyone says otherwise, we shall show them what the united force of two warriors can accomplish.” She paused, then sent him a tentative glance. “That is… if that is what you want.”
Link opened his mouth, but nothing came out.
Say something, you fool.
Nothing came to mind, however. All the emotions and dreams he had thought hopeless were now riding high in his chest, tangling in his throat and forbidding any to escape. So the hero decided to try another way of communicating his thoughts on what, exactly, he wanted.
In the next moment, those last painful inches had been crossed, and as his lips met hers, he realized the inches were no longer painful at all. His fingers slid into golden hair, and her arms came to wrap around him, warm and loving and strong, and Link thought his method had worked quite well.
They were warriors, after all, and to them, actions spoke louder than words.
"A Valentine's Day postcard version is available on my Patreon"
And finally, here it is! I'm so happy I finished it in time for Valentine's Day! 💕
Sky and his Zelda are my favorite zelink, and they deserved a new illustration for Valentine's Day, plus I love thinking that they both use romantic phrases that talk about the sky and the light
I wish you a happy Valentine's Day, filled with joy!
So I got busy and then I forgot, but rest assured, I have remembered at last! After this one, which is based around Zelda II: Adventure of Link Zelink (hence the title), I have two more fics to go, Warriors and Wild. Those'll be coming out tomorrow, though, as it is currently 2:22 AM here.
I might also write another one, First, to make up for the delay, if anyone is interested.
Anyway, without further ado~
ADVENTURE
A knock came on Zelda’s door. “Are you awake?”
Zelda looked up from where she sat at the desk, a flutter of excitement stirring in her stomach. She knew that voice. “Yes, you can come in!”
The door swung open, and in bounced the Hero of Hyrule, an eager smile on his face. The fluttering in Zelda’s stomach increased.
Ever since she’d woken up to that same smile beaming down at her, like the first ray of sunrise after an endless night, she’d noticed a distinct partiality to the hero. That was normal, she supposed, after all, he hadsaved her. But the longer she knew him, the more she felt drawn to him. His kindness, his courage, his love of adventure… it was like knowing Great-Great-Great-Uncle Link in person outside of grandmother’s stories, except better, because Link had freckles, and a goofy laugh, and could burn a salad.
“Great, you’re already up and about,” He said, radiating enthusiasm.
“I’ve had enough of sleeping in,” Zelda said with a little smile, and he snorted.
“Well, in that case…” He said, shifting from one foot to the other, his eagerness suddenly tainted by nerves. “Wanna go somewhere with me?”
Zelda blinked. “…Go where?”
A hand rubbed restlessly at the back of Link’s neck, and he bounced his weight onto his other foot again. “Oh, uh, not far. There’s some woods across Hyrule Field that I thought’d be fun to explore, and maybe we could even spend the night in Rauru Town and explore some caves to the south of there tomorrow?” He shifted his stance again, biting his lip. “That is, if you want.”
Zelda felt that fluttering get stronger, and rise up in her chest to bother her heart as well. She knew she must be smiling, and hoped the smile wasn’t as soft and sappy as she guessed it was. Link was just her friend, and even if sometimes… sometimes she hoped he might be partial to her, too, she knew he probably didn’t. So she was determined to ignore these feelings in the name and for the sake of their friendship.
Even if he made it ridiculously hard when he did things like this… giving Zelda an opportunity to see the world she’d missed for five hundred years.
“That sounds lovely, Link,” She said earnestly, clasping her hands in front of her. “But it is a little sudden!” she smiled to show she wasn’t upset, tilting her head to one side in curiosity. “What’s the occasion?”
“Oh, well,” All of a sudden, his ears seemed to be turning red. “It’s been two years since you woke up, and I wanted to celebrate!”
Zelda knew she had lost all control over her smile. He seemed emboldened by her expression, for his shoulders straightened and his chest puffed out ever-so-slightly, and Link dropped his hand from the back of his neck and held it out to her instead.
“So, is that a yes?” he grinned, a bright thing to match her own. “Want to go on an adventure with me?”
With a heart fluttering like a fairy’s wings and words failing her, Zelda reached out and took his hand.
“All right!” he cheered and began tugging her towards the door, and she let him lead her with a cheerful giggle. “Queen Zelda helped me get stuff for you, and I’ve got everything else, so let’s get going! Adventure awaits!”
“Adventure awaits!” She echoed, and the smile he sent her doubled in strength.
Perhaps… perhaps it wasn’t so foolish to hope after all.
And here we are at last, the last of the Zelink Day Drabbles! It took way longer than I expected (considering I was hoping to have them all done on November 3rd. Ha.)
But here we are at last! I struggled a little with this prompt but I think I like how it turned out. I hope you enjoy!
This whole project was a lot of fun, however, and I’ll probably write some more drabbles soon. Gotta write all the Zelink.
But for now, without further ado~
WILD
“We’ve lost so much,” Zelda said, frowning down at her map. “There’s so much rebuilding that has to be done, and the wilderness has encroached over everything, so we barely have any foundations to build off of. I just don’t know where to start—”
Link leaned over her shoulder to peer at the map, taking a bite out of an apple and chewing thoughtfully. After a long moment, he swallowed. “Well…”
His voice was thoughtful, and Zelda stepped away from the map and rubbed her forehead, letting her shoulders slump in exhaustion. “If you have an idea, Link, please, share it. I feel like I’m going out of my mind.”
The hero rubbed the back of his neck thoughtfully, mouth twisting as he tried to figure out how to phrase what he wanted to say. “…since we don’t have many foundations left, why don’t we just build around the wild bits?”
Zelda blinked at him, and he shoved a hand through his hair. “Y’know, if there’s trees where you want to build, just build in whatever clearings there are. You might have to cut down a couple or so, but that doesn’t mean you have to cut down all of them.”
Zelda blinked down at the map this time, and a small smile began to cross her face. “That… is a very interesting idea. I’ll have to think about it, but it might work. How’d you come up with it?”
He shrugged. “I’ve spent a lot of time in the Wild, and it has a special magic. I just thought it’d be a shame to lose that, and how nice it’d be to have that magic in our towns… if that makes sense.”
The Queen-to-be nodded slowly, her smile growing larger. “A new Castle Towns, and other towns too, that are full of trees and green places.” She rocked back on her heels and sent Link a beaming smile, the sight of which sent a subtle flush to his cheeks. “That sounds wonderful. Thank you, Link.”
Link shrugged, rubbing the back of his neck again. “Ah, well. I’m happy to help.”
“I wonder why I didn’t think of it myself, but then again, you are essentially king of the wild.” Zelda laughed. “So it makes sense you would think of it first.”
Link raised an eyebrow. “I thought the title was hero of the Wild.”
“Why can’t you have more than one?” She replied, raising an eyebrow teasingly.
The hero huffed. “Well, if I’m King of the Wild, then you must the Queen of the Wild.”
He realized the way that sounded a moment too late. His shut with a click, eyes wide as dinner plates.
Zelda stared back at him, her eyes equally wide, a rosy flush creeping across her cheeks towards her ears. Her gaze ducked down as she lifted a fist to her mouth, clearing her throat delicately. “Well.” She cleared her throat again. “You know, historical records state that during the time of the Hero of Hyrule, there were two Princesses Zelda, and they ended up solving the issue by both ruling. Is…” she bit her lip, twisting her fingers together nervously. “Is that along the lines of what you meant?”
Link was an experienced adventurer, and knew an escape route when he saw one. But… he was the Hero of the Wild, and this time he wanted to stand his ground.
He shifted his stance slightly, sliding his feet a little further apart and straightening his shoulders. “No.” he said, as firmly as he could manage, though the words shivered faintly. “That’s not what I was thinking of.”
Then he swallowed hard, clenched his jaw, and despite the nerves swarming in a strange mixture of cold and hot within him, he lifted his gaze and met the gaze of she who would decide his fate, with all the courage and determination he had showed on another day long ago. When the fate he faced was embodied in thousand red eyes glaring at him on a rainy field.
But now was not then.
“Oh?” Zelda said, and she reached up, fingering the edges of her chin-length hair, and she smiled. “To tell the truth… that’s not what I was thinking of, myself.”
And, unlike the last time the Hero of the Wild had stared down fate, this time all he could do was smile.
And truthfully, that was all that needed to be done.
