When the Old Testament is way ahead of its time.
That’s right. While the people of earth were very determined to only have sons inherit, God wasn’t about that. And it shows up in Numbers, the very heart of Old Testament law. It’s okay if you are shocked. I swear, there are a lot of people in the world that think the God of the Old Testament is old-fashioned curmudgeon. He’s not. I think it’s because He knows real justice. He IS real justice.
Check out Numbers 27:1-11. A man named Zelophehad had no sons. He had five daughters. And when he died, these daughters approached Moses to receive their land inheritance in the Promised Land. They could see no reason why their family name would not be among those who would inherit the land.
Moses took it before the Lord, and do you know what He said? Give it to the girls. (I think it’s one of the few times that God says someone is right.)
The daughters of Zelophehad are right. You shall give them possession of an inheritance among their father's brothers and transfer the inheritance of their father to them. And you shall speak to the people of Israel, saying, ‘If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter. (Numbers 27:7-8)
This is thousands of years before women could hold legally hold property. Thousands of years before Jane Austen wrote about Mr. Collins inheriting Longbourn, instead of the Bennet daughters in Pride and Prejudice. It was thousands of years before Downton Abbey was stressing about a male heir.
In fact, the very fact that these women could approach the leader of their people directly is quite progressive. The voices of the women have always been heard before the Lord. Scripture confirms this again and again. God is the one that said women had value. They can have property. They can be a leader of the nation. The Old Testament has many stories where women are smart and faithful. It might have been humanity who lived out scripture imperfectly, but when you read God’s word directly, it is clear that God isn’t an old-fashioned curmudgeon. It took us thousands of years to determine that daughters inheriting property was quite alright... even though God had made it very clear what He thought of it. In fact, it’s us that need to “catch up” to His ideas.
