"Let's go hiking." It wasn't even a question, more of a statement. You were bored and wanted to get up, get out, and do something with your life. You remembered one of your coworkers talking about this beautiful mountain trail that led to the most spectacular view in your entire life. Perhaps that's what spurred you to tell your boyfriend you wanted to go hiking.
He looked up at you like you were crazy. "You? You want to go hiking? Why?"
You give a small shrug. "Because all we do is sit around on our phones. I want to go outside, Zen! I want to see what all nature has to offer us! I want to see the beautiful things in nature documentaries in real life!"
With a shake of his head, he chuckles. "You're crazy. But, I have to admit, that's one of the reasons why I love you. Alright, we can go hiking. Do you have somewhere in particular you'd like to go?"
Smiling bright, you nod. "Yes! I know exactly where to go!"
"Alright then. Pack a small bag, change your clothes, and get some hiking shoes on. Meet in the car in twenty minutes?"
"Deal!"
It took even less time as you were just too excited to finally be heading outdoors and doing something more than just staying. The directions to the trail were pretty straight forward, and before too long, you reached your destination.
Zen used his hand to block the sun from his eyes as he looked up the mountain. "You want to go up there?"
You nod. "Yeah! It'll be fun! And we'll get some much needed exercise! I've been told it's about seven miles of hiking one way and seven miles back."
He widens his eyes at you. "Seven miles? How long is that going to take us? Keep in mind, you don't do this often!"
You shrug. "I don't know, maybe about a six hour round trip? And you don't need to worry about me. I can handle myself!"
"Oh, you are so lucky I love you."
With a giggle, you press a kiss to his cheek. "I'll be fine! I packed enough food for the both of us. Now c'mon! We have a mountain to hike!"
"Let's hope you don't die on the way." He mumbled under his breath.
"I heard that!"
"No you didn't!"
The hike started out great. You were enjoying the fresh air and the sun streaming through the leaves of the trees surrounding you. The two of you talked about anything and everything you could think of. The steady incline of the trail didn't bother either of you as you walked, and the dirt was packed down due to use, making it easy to traverse. Occasionally, you'd catch sight of a squirrel or rabbit, which you pointed out to Zen with much enthusiasm. He tried to guess bird calls, but you were sure he was just making things up.
At about the five mile mark, you were beginning to slow down. You really didn't think seven miles was all that much. But you were huffing and puffing, and your calves were aching. Still, you felt like you could make the last two miles. It's not that long!
However, it seemed that Zen noticed your slowed pace. He began to slow down himself, giving you an encouraging smile as he did. You scowled in response.
"Don't look at me like that."
"Look at you like what?" You could hear the smirk before you could see it, which only made your scowl deepen.
"Don't give me that high and mighty 'I-told-you-so' look." You shoot back. "I don't need your condescension."
He let out a bark of laughter. "I am not being condescending! You're reading too much into a look."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever."
"C'mon, we're almost there!" He encouraged you, his look turning a bit more sincere. "Then we can take a long break at the top, I promise!"
"Will you carry me back down the mountain?"
Zen held up his hands and gave a mock look of shock. "Hey, you got up this mountain on your own, you can get back down it on your own."
"You're so mean to me!"
"Aw, poor baby. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings."
"Yes you did!"
He laughed and shook his head. "Sorry. But you're so cute when you're pouting like that."
You scoffed and tried to pick up the pace so he wouldn't see you pout. "I do not pout."
"Yes you do! All the time!"
"Not all the time!"
"Whatever you say." He chuckled once more before he clapped his hands together. "Now come on! Let's get moving on! This last mile won't hike itself!"
He had to keep encouraging you to keep moving, otherwise you knew the sudden stop would hurt. Besides, you were almost there. You could see the end in the distance, which only increased your motivation to get him to the top. Though you whined and complained the whole time, it only took a few more minutes until you both arrived.
And the sight was definitely worth it. The mountain was the smallest one in a circle of mountains, forming a bowl around a small valley. In the center of the valley was a little lake, with small rivers from the other mountains flowing into it. There were trees everywhere, with twice the amount of birds flying between them. It looked like a picture out of a postcard or calendar. But it was real. You were standing right before it. You felt your breath catch as you took it all in.
"Wow." Zen whispered beside you. "It's so... beautiful."
"It's absolutely magnificent." You murmured back. You could feel tears prick your eyes, but you kept your emotions at bay.
Zen slung his arm around your shoulders and pulled you close. "I'm glad you dragged me up here. And I'm glad it's you I get to share this beautiful sight with. I could stay here like this forever."
"Why not?" You muttered before you sat down. You gestured for him to do the same. "Let's stay here for as long as we can."
He sat next to you, resting his head on your shoulder. And the two of you sat there for hours, wrapped in the serenity of nature, two hearts beating as one.
