The Totem Protectorates by Beat Poets Allen Ginsberg & Gary Snyder was printed Finley by the so-called ‘Hermes Free Press’ aka Zephyrus Image. It’s very rare, though it looks slight on Instagram, but highly significant as a document of an ‘investiture’ at SAN Francisco’ Grace Cathedral, as a sort of artists book, a very prescient warning of species destruction and a masterly example of agitprop mailart. A group of senators were assigned a Native American Totem animal and sent a copy of the book in a manilla envelope (missing here). Formerly part of the LSD Library crested by Julio Mario Santo Domingo with a little help from this instagrammer. The private press known at times as ‘Zephyrus Image’ produced this spoof bag of commercial pine nut snacks as a corrective to the utopian, shamanic and new age obsessions of the great Beat Poet Gary Snyder and his advocacy of a prelapsarian ‘Turtle Island’ where native Americans lived in harmony with nature a huntin’ and a gatherin’. It’s very rare indeed as after being painstakingly designed, handprinted and assembled most copies were put on the snack racks of local Bay Area bodegas.
