A B-52H Stratofortress carrying a pair of D-21 reconnaisance drones. The D-21 had its first flight on December 22nd, 1964 and had a maximum speed in excess of Mach 3.3 with an operational altitude of 90,000 ft. 😳 Four operational missions over China took place from late 1969 to early 1971 under the codename of “Senior Bowl”. The aim of the missions was to spy on the Lop Nor nuclear test site. The 1st flight failed to turn around and continued on wards before self-destructing and crashing in Siberia. The 2nd flight reached the target area and returned however the “hatch” (the module that contained the camera and film) had a partial parachute failure and was lost at sea taking all the photographs with it. The 3rd flight reached the target area, returned and successfully release the hatch however the mid-air recovery failed.  The hatch then fell into the water where it was subsequently ran over by the Destroyer sent to recover it. The 4th flight was lost over China. The wreckage was recovered and is now on display in the China Aviation Museum.
