where do i find a graph showing COVID stats (preferably wastewater, but hospitalizations and deaths and whatnot would be useful too) over the past several years? maybe even all the way back to 2020? please? when you only see a few months at a time, it's hard to put into perspective in the grand scheme of things.

it's hard to romanticize the princess/knight thing given my actual lived reality right now. i fill my days and nights with as many beautiful, meaningful things as i can in order to feel alive while the land rages with plague, famine, and war. essentially, this blog is me painting the walls of my tower.

i don't get to leave the house often. i sit at a spinning wheel to keep my body moving and supply my hands with something to do. i'm living with people who control a lot of how i make it thru life even when they will no longer be in it.

i get the appeal of wanting to be saved but also that shit will get you killed. you have to be willing to share the load and step up for each other. i wrote that post about femmes needing to be the shield sometimes and i got a couple of tags, from baby butches as far as i can discern, that pissed me tf off.

how are you better than the situation i'm trying to leave?

how is that lifting me up?

and more importantly: i don't believe you.

i would never trust you with my life or my body if you can't even hear truth in what i say. if you don't deal in truth, how can you keep your word? don't be flippant or try to push me into some type of power dynamic shit when i'm saying something real

DV isn't just a str8 people thing. i'm not accusing you of being LEO but you smell like a cop to me, not friend. y'know? people like you are why i get angry about being called "baby" sometimes. don't condescend to someone twenty years older than you.

I don't like covid or any other contagious illnesses and you could even say that I think it's wrong to knowingly cause physical harm to other people by purposely spreading your germs to them when you're sick but there are some really terrible people who claim to be covid cautious/covid conscious/zero covid/etc. and unless people actively hold those people accountable for their horrible, antisocial behavior, there are going to be a lot more people who will ostracize you for caring at all about covid and it won't be a surprise that they do so.

Introduction

In the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, Australia was the envy of the world. While other countries were overwhelmed by widespread transmission, staggering mortality rates and overrun health systems, Australia remained largely COVID-free. Dubbed the “hermit kingdom”, Australia quickly closed international borders in March 2020 and implemented a nationwide “shutdown” – the first of multiple lockdowns – to flatten the curve of transmission. Though initially slow to act, former Prime Minister Scott Morrison begrudgingly abandoned his neoliberal commitment to balancing budgets and small government for a Keynesian approach to ensure Australians could weather the storm. Public health measures started to ease in April as case numbers drastically decreased and Australia was globally hailed a COVID success. Australians emerged from 2020 with a newfound sense of camaraderie and hope for positive change after such a circuit-breaking catastrophe. Two years later, however, Australia faced widespread infection, mass disability and a 13 percent excess mortality rate for the first eight months of 2022. How did Australia transition so suddenly from zero-COVID to COVID-central?

This chapter will explore the ideology underpinning the federal government’s decision to “let rip”. I will begin my analysis by tracing the different approaches undertaken by the Morrison government, from the beginning of the pandemic to the Omicron wave. I will then identify three pillars of thought underpinning his “let it rip” policy – neoliberalism, prosperity gospel and social Darwinism – that I argue are one and the same. Lastly, I will examine the Albanese government’s response to COVID and the apparent acceptance of “living with COVID” by the Australian people, using a Gramscian analysis to explain this attitudinal shift.
