Circles - Jaehyun

Bus 312.

Smells the same scent, looks the same clean and cold, commutes the same route home. Bus 312 for Jaehyun, who gets on first before the other; strides confidently to where he seats every night, two rows from the rear. Alone.

Bus 312.

Sitting by the window, head tilted down. She rides the bus every night by herself. Serene, unbothered, providing a shelter for her busy mind to rest. Bus 312 for her.

Jaehyun can only watch from his seat, a few rows back; completed with a pair of earphones attached on each of his ears. She gets off first, but not without forgetting to bid the driver goodbye. The nice old man always tilts his head in acknowledgement, kind Mr. Yoo. Jaehyun knows him well too, of course.

She never sees. Jaehyun gets on first, and gets off after.

The admirer, and the admiree.

The library.

Smells the same dusty mist, looks the same rustic and warm, provides the same open world of wonders for her to explore.

Her spot, at the far corner nowhere near the usual crowds of students. Laptop open, a pack of milk candy on the table as the only companion. Nobody dares to approach, cold stare she gives out already more than enough warning to back off.

Want to know the truth?

Exact same time, 12 to 3. Her eyes will wander to the spot, and she will always find what she's looking for. Her muse.

Warm dark brown eyes, high bridged; pointed nose, thick bottom lip, snow shade skin. A pair of dimples upon the naturally pink cheeks. Soft, shiny brown tresses. Delicately round jaw, nowhere like her own.

Her fingers start flying above the keyboard of her laptop, dancing in a fluid pace, pause is not a familiar word.

The library.

Nose buried inside books, thick as fists. Glasses perched on top of his nose, sometimes replaced by contact lenses if he has the time; or feeling fancier than usual. 12 to 3, library is a responsibility for Jaehyun. Not more, not less. He needs to study, but he also doesn't need it all that much.

She gets in first, but Jaehyun gets out first. The latter never cared much about the library and its inhabitant, library is out of responsibility. Library is where Jaehyun does what he had to do.

Never was he aware of the pair of eyes, curious and sparkling, carefully watching his every move from the distance, studying.

Calculating. Imagining.

Coffee shop.

Lingering scent of roasted coffee bean and baked sugar. Constant low buzz of people conversing, timely echoing dings from the cashier bell, loud exclamation of barista calling customer's order.

Jaehyun's second favourite time of the day. 5 hours part time shift, free tasting of new snacks recipes or coffee menus. Hearing his favourite songs throughout the room from the playlist when it's his turn to pick, including a song for the bus boy. It never left his playlist anyway, no matter how much he changed the others.

His 1st favourite time, of course, when he gets off his shift before 12 am, and gets on the bus.

Convenience store.

Startling bell of the door. Bright light as if it's an alien ship ready to take off. Smell of ramyeon, MSG-heavy snacks, and cheap beer is the repetitive pattern coming through her nose.

Welcome to the store. The total is xxx won. Here's your change. You can make the ramyeon over there. Enjoy your meal. Thank you. Have a nice day.

4 to 12, she is a robot. What do you expect from working here, anyway? It is the dreading part of the day, but life is a balance. She can have her bliss in the middle of the day, hence the suffering at noon. With every punch on the cashier machine, all she wants to do is to get on the bus at 12:15 am, and sleep.

That way, 12 to 3 at the library will come faster.

Sick - Taeyong

The sound of the front door being opened distracted you from your cooking. You turned your head around to find your fiance heading straight to where the bedroom is, without greeting you in the kitchen or even taking his shoes off. It usually would irk you, but you didn’t really pay attention because your prawns were going to get overcooked if you left it unattended.

“Taeyong? You’re here?”

You got no answer, and that was when you felt a bit weirded out. He would usually utter a response, even if it was just a grunt or any sound to reply to you. You frowned, plating the cooked dish first before turning the stove off and went to check out on him.

He was laying face down on the bed, body limp and still fully clothed from work. Thankfully his feet were dangling on the side of the bed, his shoes not staining the bedcover. He might freaked out on himself if he realised what he did just now, walking inside the apartment still with his shoes on.

“Yongie? Is everything okay?”

“Hmm.” He responded weakly.

You sat next to him. “You’re sick, aren’t you?” You placed your hand on his burning back, you could feel it through his shirt. The fabric was soaked with his sweat. You sighed quietly. He knew that he shouldn’t be too hard on himself at work, you have told him many times too. He would always easily got sick, and you didn’t like to see him suffer.

“Have you eaten anything today? Beside the coffee for breakfast?”

He shook his head. It’s a bad habit of him, not minding his own health when it came to deadlines and such. Always forgetting his meals if you didn’t ask him if he had eaten or not.

“You want me to make you soup?”

“I want to sleep for a bit… Sorry I ruined the planned dinner.” He mumbled.

You rubbed his back soothingly. “Okay, but you have to change your clothes first. And you have to eat first thing in the morning tomorrow. No excuses! Wait a minute.”

You walked back to the kitchen and pour him a mug of hot tea, prepared a fever medicine and a glass of water as well. When you got back inside the bedroom, he already flipped himself so now he lied on his back, with his right arm covering his eyes. He might be dizzy from the bright lights.

“Let’s take the medicine and change your clothes.” You murmured, caressing his arm gently until he pried his eyes open and struggled to sit, leaning on the headboard.

“You know what I’m gonna say.” you started as he swallowed the pill and took a sip of the tea.

“I know.” He pouted like a little kid. “I can’t guarantee that I won’t do it again though, honey, I’m sorry to make you worry.”

You smiled and kissed his cheek. “Don’t be sorry. I’m proud to see you being so hardworking, but don’t push yourself too hard, Taeyongie. I really hate it when you’re sick. Alright?”

He nodded, thumb caressing your cheek affectionately. You leaned into his touch; you missed him so much. The night was supposed to be your dinner date, you cooked fancy homemade dishes earlier; but you could always give it to your neighbors next door, Lucas and Jungwoo. Those kiddos never rejected anything, especially food.

“It’s getting cold.” He whined. You chuckled at his pouty face, shuffling to the wardrobe to retrieve a grey training pants and black t-shirt for him to wear.

“Here, let me help.” He moved aside to face you, letting you unbutton his sweat-drenched shirt before lifting his hands up in the air so you could slide the t-shirt in. He’s such a baby whenever he’s sick. “Big baby.” You pinched his nose after you successfully took off his trousers, socks and shoes; leaving him with the grey joggers. He just stuck his tongue out and sniffed before sneezing a bunch of times in a row.

“Looks like I need to sleep on the couch tonight, you germs-“

“NO!” He exclaimed loudly, gripping your wrist immediately. “Cuddle with me! I’m cold~”

“Let go, I need to give the food to Lucas and Jungwoo since you’re not gonna eat it-”

He tugged on your wrist. “Nooooo, you’ll trick me and leave me here alone! You can give it to them tomorrow morning!” He jutted his bottom lip out even more.

“Ugh, fine.” You exhaled loudly. “But I need to turn the lights off. Let go, big baby.”

He grinned and let go of his grip, weakly sliding inside the comforter and pulled it all the way under his chin, leaving only his face visible. “Come here faaaaast-”

“Sssh! Behave or I’ll sleep ou-”

“Okay, okay~!” He giggled, while sniffling in between. It made you doubt that he’s actually just wanted to be babied if his body wasn’t burning earlier. “Come here.”

You changed your clothes into pajamas and slipped under the covers beside him. He instantly looped his arm around your waist, bringing you closer to him. He buried his face on your neck, nuzzling it with his nose. Everything felt too hot; his hands, his chest, his forehead, his face- it was uncomfortable for you because he was still burning up, but you would do anything if it meant he’s comfortable. He placed a light kiss on your throat; you could feel his smile.

“Good night~”

“Good night, Taeyongie. Get well soon, my big baby.” You continued to rub his back soothingly as his breathing steadied, and you felt yourself drifting away to dreamland.

The rain was pouring as you went down the street, umbrella in hand, walking back to your place from your last class of the day. The cold weather couldn’t even be defeated by the thick coat you were wearing, parts of it already drenched since your umbrella was only a small one, and it would take another 15 minutes to get inside your warm and dry apartment; so you decided to look for something to warm yourself up instead.

After another 5 minutes, your eyes caught a small coffee shop on the corner of the street, radiating warmth as its yellow light danced in front of your eyes, waving at you to take a peek inside. Deciding to follow whatever your heart wanted at the moment, you pushed the glass door open with the ringing of a bell, indicating your arrival. You placed your umbrella in the holder right next to the door, dusting your coat a bit to get rid of water droplets before walking up to the counter.

You were in luck, you thought, since you had no idea the coffee shop existed until this night. Welcoming smell of coffee wafted through the air right the second you stepped inside. The place was not too small, nor too big; the tables were neatly arranged, dominated by monochromatic tones of brown and white. The large windows overlooking the streets make it even more compelling on rainy nights, twinkling street lights and raindrops decorating its surface in a melancholic manner. Slow tunes from the speakers filled the silence just enough for it to get people comfortable without being too loud. You smiled to yourself, knowing you were definitely going to be a regular if the coffee turned out great, which you assumed it would.

Your eyes were scanning the menu board when someone came up behind the cashier, clearing his throat to get your attention.

“Good evening! May I have your order?”

You looked down- just a little, because the guy was towering over you, and he looked familiar, yet you couldn’t put a name to the face. His eyes widened for a split second after he got a good look at your face, but he was back all cute and smiles as you gave him your order.

“One hot cappuccino, please.”

You paid for your drink and went to a table right beside the window, your favourite spot on cafes like these. You had already forgotten about the cashier guy after you got engrossed with your phone, the gadget full of notifications about papers on one of your class’ group chats.

“One hot cappuccino for you, Miss.” a voice interrupted your focus, hand carefully placing your coffee on top of the table, along with a plate of chocolate cake you definitely did not order.

“But I didn’t order-”

The waiter left with a small bow, completely ignoring your unfinished statement. Eyebrows furrowed in confusion, your attention changed to the piece of tissue paper under your pastry fork which got some writings on it.

I asked you to go get a cup of coffee with me, so you pay for the cake instead~

“Hey.”

The cashier guy stood next to your table, smiling down at you and pointed the empty seat in front of you.

“Can I sit here?”

You could feel the gear inside your brain working hard to figure who he was, but it was still to no avail.

“i hope you like chocolate! I was a bit fascinated seeing you in person for the first time, I forgot to not charge you for the coffee.” he grinned, his hand shot up to scratch the back of his head awkwardly. He was replied by silence from your part. Seeing you in person?

“You don’t remember me?” he pointed to himself, eyes wide in disbelief. “And here I was, thinking I made an amazing impression with my memes.”

Everything clicked on your head and you let out the loudest laugh, making everyone’s head turned around to your direction. You mouthed an apology and cleared your throat, trying to brush off the embarrassment.

“Meme guy! That’s why your ways are cheesy as well. God, writing on a tissue paper?” you flailed the evidence in front of his flushed face. You remembered the meme guy now, and he looked different; that was why you couldn’t recognize him. He looked thousand times cuter meeting face to face. Not that he wasn’t handsome- his face was like, sculpted to perfection, but the pictures he displayed on his profile made you portray him as a chic, rather cool kind of guy; and he mentioned something about dj-ing, not working in a cute little coffee shop like this. “You didn’t struck me as a type who works in a place like this.”

“This coffee shop is my friend’s, and his brother would usually help him but his finals schedules are this week so I’m replacing him temporarily.” he explained, grimacing afterwards. “I want to apologize because I haven’t called you yet from a couple of weeks ago when I was the one who asked for the date, my finals finished last week and this week I have works to do here.”

You waved your hands dismissively, replying to him with a smile. “It’s alright, it was all fun and jokes anyway, I genuinely had fun when we were chatting. You made a great first impression, you know.”

He smiled widely, and you could see a small dimple appearing; you hadn’t got a good look on his face before, and he just got even cuter by the minute. You wondered about your luck, being able to find such guy as your Tinder match when you installed the app jokingly the other day, your friend saying you could maybe find someone to have fun with and stop being the lame single friend that you were to them.

“I wasn’t joking when I asked you for a coffee date though, do you still have some time? I made you coffee earlier, so let’s have the date now, shall we?”
