As someone who's never seen Voltron outside of tumblr fanart but has watched some mech stuff would you recommend it? :3
Oh yes, absolutely! I was born juuust in time to have vague memories of Voltron growing up, but it’s one of those popular pop culture things I mostly just knew of, rather than experienced. All I really remember of the original show (or rather, the anime mashup that the West and other countries know as Voltron) is the theme song.
Studio Mir and Dreamworks have done a brilliant job with the reboot/reimagining so it doesn’t require knowledge of the original series. And while it does have echoes of ATLA and Korra (the executive director of the studio worked on ATLA, and the studio in general did Korra), since Voltron: TLD doesn’t have the same director as those series, it avoids some pitfalls Avatar did. Namely the shoddy romance, despite what fanart, as usual, would have you believe (like there’s the barest hints of any potential budding relationship, which is a nice change of pace, compared to having it in your face like in Avatar). The show for the most part keeps character relations relevant to the plot while still being very entertaining, and while it doesn’t have the budget of the Avatar series, it’s still an artistic pleasure to watch.
Having watched both seasons (although once each), my favorite things would have to be how they avoided a surprising amount of tropes to give the majority of the cast a strong presence and character, rather than make them feel like stereotypes. Especially in regards to Shiro and Pidge, holy shit. The one exception is Hunk, which is my main criticism of the show - I love the character, but they can miss me with the repeated fat jokes, which for some reason is more prominent in season 2. I absolutely love that they made the conscious decision to not make Allura pale-skinned and blonde. And even though she’s alien and so her race/racial coding is ~ambiguous~, a minor detail I did pick up on from season 2 is that her hair indeed has a much thicker texture than I initially thought, so there’s that! The alien designs are pretty great as well!
And from a mech standpoint, that part is great as well. It’s really nice to see a Western interpretation of the genre while still being very true to it, and the mech and monster design is fantastic. They use CG for both, and it blends in with the handdrawn animation very nicely! Voltron itself has some subtle details I really appreciate that make it look less like an obvious toy and and more like a part of the universe.
So uh, yeah! I do highly recommend Voltron as it did exceed my expectations, and the first season in particular has fantastic pacing. I may not gush about it like my preferred space adventure show, but it’s still a pretty great ride. :^)
loving your stormhawks posts :3 I used to watch that show almost everyday when i was younger and seeing it again makes me smile :3
I’m glad you’re enjoying them while I flail all over these episodes again! :D
But damn, yeah, I forgot just how fun and how much worldbuilding there was in this series. And it’s barely aged at ALL. Everything still looks so awesome and smooth, and I didn’t realise just how much DETAIL there was in everything. 8D *continues flailing about this series*
Your muffet/spider family human au designs are adorable!
thank you so much friend :D
I love the idea of Bodie actually using the word 'goodie-good' whenever he talks about sex because he looks like probably would
This sounds exactly right
Who are the cool guys with the swords in your latest doodle, if you don't mind me asking? :3
My first husbando when I was 12
He’s actually one guy with dual personality (sort of) and was the protagonist of a veeeeeerrrryyy old fighting game called The Last Blade. His name is Kaede.
I always love looking at your work! It's so pretty and painterly :3
