Writing Challenge - Handprints
Premise: write a scene using an aspect from one of your favorite writing trends (examples, a character dresses as a vampire, or they’re watching a show about a dystopian future). I chose to write Dee, Sparks, and Ziba celebrating Halloween together!
~
Sparks and ZIba had been practically buzzing with excitement all week as October drew closer and closer. Dee wasn’t quite sure what was so great about it but both of their partners seemed excited about it so they were going to humor them while they could.
Dee woke up on October 1st to the smell of something absolutely delicious somehow sweet and spicy at the same time. They also woke up to a completely empty bed, both of their partners having left a while ago judging by the lack of heat on either side of Dee.
With a groan, Dee forced themself out of bed in search of either that yummy smell or one of their partners. Hopefully the three would all be together.
Dee stumbled into the kitchen in desperate need of coffee and breakfast, almost tripping over something in their path. On closer examination, it was a medium sized orange ball with black lines going around it. Dee reached down to inspect it and was even more confused when the other side had a comical little black face on it with a triangle eyes and nose and a crooked smile.
“Oh, you’re awake!” Ziba sounded so excited to find Dee awake, Sparks’s little cheer from the other room showed that Sparks shared her excitement.
“Wha-” Dee cut themself off with a jaw-cracking yawn “what is this?” they were way not awake enough for mystery orange face balls.
Ziba laughed “It’s a Jack O’ Lantern” she explained, taking it from Dee to place it on the counter before taking Dee by the hand and gently leading them from th kitchen.
“Wait, breakfast!” Dee protested, okay they whined but they whined in protest!
Ziba laughed agian “breakfast is already out here” she explained as she lead Dee to the living room where Sparks was sprawled out on the couch as a lanky skeleton man danced across the TV screen singing something to softly for Dee to make out.
Ziba pushed Sparks’s feet off the couch so that Dee could take their usual spot in the middle of the couch with Sparks and Ziba on either side. Sparks leaned on Dee as Sparks handed them a plate of pancakes from the coffee table with little orange, white, and yellow triangle candies arrangeed in a smiley face. Ziba turned up the volume of the TV and Dee could finally understand the words of the song “This is Halloween! Halloween! Halloween!”
~~~
This takes places technically just outside of the canon of Handprints. In the universe of Handprints, almost all holidays have been outlawed, banned, and/or forgotten. Dee was raised in the main stream culture of the world and so has never actually even heard of Halloween before. Ziba and Sparks though where raised in a different, more underground type of culture where many of the holidays are still celebrated. Both Sparks and Ziba love Halloween and are those people who go all out on decorating for it.
As always, if you have any questions or just want to talk about these three/the story they’re from I absolutely adore talking about them and my inbox is always open!
How I Paid for College
RETRO REVIEW
How I Paid for College: A Novel of Sex, Theft,Friendship & Musical Theater
Marc Acito
276 pages
Broadway Books, 2004
Hard work may pay off in the long run, but the benefits of laziness are immediate.
Edward Zanni is a high school senior in suburban New Jersey in 1983, Edward and his friends are “Play People,” also known as theater kids. The summer before school starts, this band of friends embarks on an adventure of “CV”, also known as Creative Vandalism. At the start of the school year, Edward’s newly remarried dad drops the news that he won’t pay for Julliard, Edward’s dream, he’ll only pay for Edward to go to college for business. What’s a guy, along with his group of madcap friends to do?
Natie Nudelman, the group’s computer whiz kid with a broken moral compass comes up with a list. 1. Work. 2. Scholarships. 3. Theft. 4. Murder. OK, murder is a little extreme, but theft? Well, Edward does get a job, and through a little fun and lighthearted theft, fraud and money-laundering to create a scholarship, they should be able to get him to Julliard. And as a bonus, they might get back at his dad’s new wife. All the while they are scheming, there’s a lot of sexual tension in the group as openly bisexual Edward is having trouble pleasing his girlfriend Kelly because he can’t stop thinking about jock-turned Play Person Doug.
Books written about teens in the eighties basically ignored the LGBT community, so it’s nice to see a bisexual character whose sexuality isn’t the source of drama and heartache. Doug knows Edward has a crush on him and even though he doesn’t return the crush, he is kind of flattered. (Also, Edward isn’t the only LGBT character in the book....but no spoilers).
How I Paid for College is absolutely hilarious. The teenage characters are smarter and funnier and somehow cooler (even though they’re supposed to be big nerds) than I have ever been. There’s a lovely found family storyline, queer characters, crazy schemes, and an absolute loathing of the suburbs that teenage me could relate hard to. (”What have they got to be snobby about? Don’t they realize they live in New Jersey?” asks on character.) It’s a damn shame this hasn’t been made into a movie.
***** I basically NEVER do this but I went ahead and Fan-casted this book because I love it so much***
