deeply unserious book
Also, if anyone wants a preview of Censored by Confucius, somebody put up “Two Corpses Make Love in the Wilderness“ (the only jiangshi story in this abridged edition of the work) here.
gulltown replied to your post “Things I learned from reading the 1996 partial translation of Yuan...”
This sounds like a party, I'm putting it on my reading list
For reference, the version I read is entitled Censored by Confucius: Ghost Stories by Yuan Mei translated by Kam Louie and Louise Edwards. There’s apparently a more complete translation by Paolo Santangelo called Zibuyu, What The Master Would Not Discuss according to Yuan Mei, but I currently lack the immediate library access or hundreds of dollars in cash monies needed to obtain it
Things I learned from reading the 1996 partial translation of Yuan Mei‘s What the Master Would Not Discuss today:
Sometimes exorcists are really just con artists who have an arrangement with a local spirit to haunt crap until they burn some fake prayer strips.
Don’t burn an arrest warrant with your name on it - even if it’s only there because your coworker played a practical joke. The hell bureaucracy will process the warrant as written and send the ghost police to beat you to death.
If you are an unjust magistrate who orders somebody’s buttocks to be caned unfairly, you may end up cursed to have a bleeding butt growing out of your back.
If you are a ghost and the person you’re supposed to be haunting moves, you will need a magistrate to write you an official ghost pass before you can continue haunting them - because otherwise you will not be processed by hell’s immigration inspectors.
The hell bureaucracy is really just sort of a mess in general. You can be sued by the ghost of a person you've never met, whereupon you will be cast from your body and put in ghost jail until your case comes up. Even if you win, you will be expected to pay the underworld's court officials for handling the affair.
If you are a ghost and the mortal man you are trying to seduce won’t cave to your advances, possess the eggplant he’s eating such that you can continually harass him from within his stomach.
The terms "handfuls of jade white brocade" and “immortal rosy rod” meant pretty much what I thought they meant.
Do not poop in a human skull. Just. Don’t.
"Fear is the gift from gods"
"Do you know what it brings to us? Escaping death"
i want to draw stories like Zibuyu someday
