By the late 1980s, all that the video buccaneers needed was an unassuming location to perform the act of copying the film (a religious site, in this case), a handful of televisions, video recorders, equalisers, an adaptor and the master copy of the film to be duplicated... The video moment in Bombay, simultaneously ephemeral and viral, was murky, with its key players constantly switching sides of the law, sometimes to provide a false front to the mafia in the film business, and sometimes by fully laundering their black money into legitimacy.
