I saw her through the other dancers in a world of her own while I was drawing backstage. The other dancers were carrying on in rehearsal oblivious to her sitting on the floor. I wondered what she was thinking of. Her moment in the spotlight? Dance? Home? A loved one? . . I used pastel, #derwentcharcoal #derwentpastelpencils on grey Ingres paper. The other dancers in front become almost abstract to the main focus. Your eyes cannot help being drawn to the girl who wants to remain hidden for a moment of solitude. This is at the beginning of the ballet when Cinderella is in the kitchen dreaming of going to the ball! I loved the thoughtful pose. Love Is In The Air, Zoe James-Williams

This is a painting of Alina Cojocaru, Prima Ballerina of the English National Ballet and previously The Royal Ballet. This was painted when she invited me to watch her rehearse in the Royal Opera House. Alina is a sublime dancer and I wanted to capture her emotion and the passion she brings to ballet . I used a mix of watercolour and pastel and used Japanese paper on her tutu to give it texture.
